We use our lived experience to help them to understand and navigate community services and systems, and empower them to use their voice effectively to achieve their goals.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Family Support Partner (FSP) provides peer-to-peer support, resources, and education to parents or guardians of youth receiving services within the System of Care (e.g. Integrated Services of Kalamazoo, Elizabeth Upjohn, Family and Children Services). In this role, the FSP builds partnerships with parents/guardians and professionals and is committed to promoting non-judgmental and respectful attitudes about families, community partners, and service providers. The FSP focuses on the needs of the parent/guardian and 1) helps them recognize self-efficacy, 2) promotes the parent/guardian perspective, and 3) builds partnership values between families, communities, and system stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Meet, greet, and welcome families to ASK services.
2. Build mutual respect, confidence, and trust with family.
3. Provide non-judgmental support to families, community partners, colleagues, and other service providers
4. Utilize personal and professional life experiences to provide peer support to parents/guardians.
5. Help families build skills to use their voice to advocate effectively for the needs of their family within the System of Care.
6. Collaborate with families and other agencies to determine and achieve desired outcomes.
7. Collaborate with all stakeholders to implement an Individual Plan of Service (IPOS).
8. Help the family integrate their strengths and culture into the Individual Plan of Service (IPOS).
9. Maintain clinical files and documents as required by ISK Quality Monitoring Review requirements and/or other funding sources.
10. Customize helping approaches to fit the family’s uniqueness, personality, culture, and interest.
11. Inform, empower, link, and support families to effectively use ASK and other community services and resources.
12. Assess and respond to the immediate safety and stabilization needs of families served.
13. Communicate ideas by using life experiences as learning and teaching tools.
14. Utilize the family’s expertise in problem-solving and solution-seeking.
15. Respond to the needs of families served in a timely fashion.
16. Summarize accomplishments and next steps collaboratively with the family and stakeholders.
17. Follow up with family to determine referral completion and satisfaction of services.
18. Communicate a sense of hope and celebrate successes as families complete ASK services.
19. Attend all required trainings to ensure continued Parent Support Partner certification through the Association of Children’s Mental Health (ACMH).
20. Facilitate groups, events, or activities as assigned by their supervisor (Parent Advisory Group, Support Groups, Sibshops, Community Trainings, etc.)
21. Use creative engagement strategies with families and stakeholders.
22. Positively contribute to the over System of Care for youth and families.
23. Participate in stigma-reducing activities and events in the community.
24. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be the parent or guardian of a child with emotional, behavioral, or other mental health challenges and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities.
2. Willing and able to share their lived experience as a parent/guardian raising a child with emotional, behavioral, or other mental health challenges and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities.
3. Experience navigating services in complex, child-serving systems (behavioral health, child welfare, juvenile justice, special education, foster care, etc . . .)
4. High School Diploma/GED
5. Must be eligible and complete the required training in the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) approved curriculum and ongoing training model through the Association of Children’s Mental Health (ACMH).
6. Have effective oral and written communication skills, time management, and organizational skills.
7. Ability to work successfully with a diverse group of individuals, families, youth, and community agencies.
8. Ability to work flexible hours including some evening/weekend availability and overnight travel.
9. Valid driver’s license, a reliable insured vehicle to perform job duties.
