Position Summary
The intern will support the Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MSAT) group which specializes in the improvement of manufacturing processes for AAV. The position will be tasked with a central project, which will be focused on small scale model qualification (SSMQ) and supporting work, under the guidance of an experienced Senior Process Engineer. The intern will be exposed to various upstream and downstream unit operations including cell culture activities, lysis, clarification and chromatography.
This position will be based in RTP, North Carolina and will report to a Senior Process Engineer, MSAT.
Job Responsibilities
Assist with cell culture and purification processes as well as contribute to a central project
Upstream – Improve bioreactor productivity scalability
Downstream – Improve harvest performance scalability
Support bench scale experiments, scale-up of unit operations, high-throughput screening, for upstream and downstream activities
Learn hands on techniques for mammalian cell culture and purification of AAV which may include cell growth, viral production, lysis, clarification, and chromatography
Participate in experimental design, data compilation, data analysis, and summarization of experimental findings
Maintain clear records of experiments using ELN (Electronic Lab Notebook) system
Communicate progress with MSAT members within internal meetings
Present completed central project at the end of internship
Minimum Requirements
Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biomanufacturing, Biomolecular Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or related field
Must be at least a Junior in college at the time of your application
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills
Education in Biomanufacturing principals
Prior internship, work, or volunteer/extracurricular experience
Prior laboratory experience in cell growth or purification activities
Proficient with MS Office Suite and ability to learn new technologies quickly
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Available to work full-time during the summer months (May-August)
Proactive and solution-driven mindset
Strong sense of accountability and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Flexible and willing to support a variety of tasks for the MSAT team
