PURPOSE

Columbia Public Schools are dedicated to providing an excellent education for all students. The Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for curriculum, curricular materials, and instructional practices. It also involves supervising the Lead Curriculum Coordinator who oversees the District curriculum coordinators, collaborating with the Chief of Schools and Chief Academic Officer and directors, and fostering positive communication between administrators, teachers, and curriculum coordinators.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

In collaboration with administrators, principals and educators, the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction is expected to inspire, achieve and maintain a shared mission and vision for learning in collaboration and guidance received from the Chief of Academic Officer.

  • Develop long-term program goals and formulate and implement plans to meet the goals.
  • Supervise directors and Lead Curriculum Coordinator, staff, payroll, purchasing and calendars.
  • Lead the vision and activities of Curriculum and Instruction department with focus on improving student learning by improving instruction.
  • Develops 5–7-year cycle of curriculum development and implementation.
  • Coordinates standards work including conceptions, framework, and multi-year timeline of implementation with coordinators.
  • Works cooperatively with district and school administrators to ensure understanding of, and compliance with, policies and procedures pertaining to curriculum and instruction.
  • Maintain public documents of curriculum on District website as well ensuring support and access for teachers to curriculum documents.
  • Coordinates alignment between curricular documents, course catalogues, syllabi engaging coordinators, building administrators, and guidance staff. This would include a cycle for reviewing and consideration of course additions/deletions.
  • Collaborate with other executive directors within the Academic Division and other members of the Leadership team in order to align support for students.
  • Engages in Achievement meetings collaborating with Executive Director of School Improvement, Executive Director of Assessment, Intervention, Data and Innovation, Chief Academic Officer, Chief of Schools, Chief Equity Officer, and Chief Human Resources Officer.
  • Co-facilitate with the Chief Academic Officer the focus of improving instruction in specific areas aligning this work with multi-year professional development plan.
  • Partner with AID in development, enhancement, and implementation of RtI Model at all levels.
  • Collaborate with educators throughout the system developing innovative approaches to learning and providing support.

Supervises:  Director of Fine Arts, Director of English Language Learners and Migrant Services, Lead Curriculum Coordinator

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum: Master’s in education or Curriculum and Instruction or related field, a minimum of three-five years of experience as a curriculum coordinator or administrative or supervisory experience. Teaching certificate at any grade level.

 

Preferred: Educational Specialist degree or Doctoral degree in Education and Administration or Curriculum and Instruction or education related field

Computation: Work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical inference, and analyze data for instruction. Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Perform computer word processing (including spreadsheets) and internet research. Access and create reports using the Districts student information software and databases. These are essential functions of the job.

 

Reasoning: Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Solve a variety of problems in many different situations. Interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Demonstrate executive functions such as planning, organizing, remembering, and regulating information and behavior as they pertain to student performance and achievement. These are essential functions of the job.

 

Technology: Integrate technology into daily instruction; present information to students using a variety of media. Access and create reports using the District’s student information software and databases. Readily utilize smart boards, projectors and other instructional technology provided by the district. Adhere to all District policies and procedures regarding technology use. These are essential functions of the job. Physical demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis, and considerable dexterity in operating office equipment. Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position including attend Board meetings, student activities and events. Weekends or evening hours is common. These are essential functions of the job.

 

Environmental conditions: The work environment is consistent with a typical office environment; however, they will occasionally be outside in temperatures below freezing and above 100 degrees. The individual who holds this position is frequently required to work irregular or extended hours. These are essential functions of the job.
