This position may require access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require the Company to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.

Role and responsibilities

The EUV source team in San Diego operates in a fast-paced, uniquely innovative and challenging environment to deliver novel solutions to support EUV product roadmap within ASML.The Droplet Generation System Function is responsible for creating a steady stream of micron-scale droplets of molten tin injected into a vacuum vessel at a rate of tens of thousands per second, which generate EUV light when hit by infrared laser pulses.The functional team is fully responsible for development of the droplet generator, for integration and functional testing of the modules and sub-components, and for overall integration of the module within the system.

The complexity of the droplet generation requirements and corresponding organizational challenges put exciting demands on the Group Leader, who will be a manager of a multidisciplinary team responsible for test execution, planning, and support, for maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrades of test benches, tools, and fixtures used for investigative and validation testing of existing and future Droplet Generators.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the technical decisions within the boundaries imposed by process and planning, will proactively drive the development and engineering work in the team, provide individual contributions as an active technical team member, and above all, will use leadership and teamwork skills to solve problems and optimize team performance.

Team Leadership:

  • Support the Functional Group Leader by managing resources (up to ~ 10 people) in the laboratory test team, working with team-members who take operational responsibility within project assignments.
  • Manage the delivery of work reporting communications that meet the requirements of the ASML development programs; review technical solutions proposed, technical product documentation produced by the group and coaching of group members.
  • Continuously focus on efficiency of the group; work with group leader and department manager to define and implement structural improvements as necessary.
  • Organize effective teamwork and communication through meetings and motivate team members, maintain regular 1:1 routines with team members.
  • Take responsibility for high quality employee targets, gather information for appraisals and conduct performance reviews.
  • Monitor personal planning, identify bottlenecks, discuss larger/long-term picture and impact of scope/priority changes.
  • Focus on driving the team on proper execution to achieve high quality deliverables.

Technical Contribution

  • Guide development of high-level architecture for the formation of tin droplets in the EUV source, as well as metrology systems for measuring the performance of the system, in order to improve the EUV generation process;
  • improve droplet formation models via experimental validation; build and maintain model improvement roadmaps.
  • Provide input to technology roadmaps and identify key scientific learning objectives and define corresponding experimental design to arrive at design guidelines, performance requirements and procedures for product development and engineering design.
  • Identification of key scientific learning objectives and corresponding experimental design which will further the technological progress of the Droplet Generation process.
  • Develop and execute module, sub-module and integrated system performance tests, analyze test results and extract actionable knowledge from sub-module to full-system levels.
  • Troubleshoot and isolate equipment problems in laboratory and integration testing, assist in analyzing, diagnosing, and troubleshooting problems in the factory and at customer sites remotely and in person.
  • Document learning and communicate knowledge to engineering and product development teams to guide product improvement and release of new product nodes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and experience

  • Requires PhD degree in a STEM field with a minimum of 5 years of post-grad research and development experience; MS degree with equivalent experience will be considered
  • Demonstrated experience in a project or people-management role.
  • Experience with semiconductor capital equipment development is a strong plus.
  • Deep understanding of scientific research methods and strong scientific curiosity
  • Ability to clearly and logically communicate ideas and knowledge to various audiences, covering full range from large, complex systems to individual technical details.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a research project involving multiple stakeholders and constraints, balancing functional requirements against aggressive timelines and resource limitations.
  • Excellent self-actuated time and task management skills with the ability to distinguish and focus on highest-impact actions.
  • Hands-on experience with complex system design and build, including rapid prototyping, characterization and troubleshooting, and system-level demonstrations.
  • Extensive experience with experimental data analysis and development of data analysis tools with, for instance, Matlab or Python and data acquisition systems such as NI Labview
  • Familiarity with gas flow systems, particularly flow through long narrow tubes and flow-restricting geometry, vacuum systems design and operation.
  • Affinity to managing integral business processes in fast growing and dynamic business environments.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and to complete assignments with minimal supervision, establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships
  • Ability to provide technical direction, motivate and lead a team of professional engineers, driving the execution excellence to achieve high quality deliverables.
  • Ability to take decisions for the team based on existing facts, and to organize team structure and scheduling to lead towards achieving the required goals.
  • Excellence in written and verbal communication, strong social and coordination skills

Other information

The California base annual salary / hourly range for this role is currently $140,250 - $233,750. Pay scales are determined by role, level, location and alignment with market data. Individual pay is determined through interviews and an assessment of several factors that that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to, job-related skills, relevant education and experience, certifications, abilities of the candidate and pay relative to other team members.
