Aspen School District is seeking a qualified Athletic Director for Aspen High School to start the 2025/26 school year. 

 

Position Title: High School Athletic Director

Department: Aspen High School 

Reports to: Aspen High School Principal or designee

Classification: Salaried, Full-time Exempt

Contract Period:  210 Days as determined annually

Salary: $85,000 - $110,000 starting salary DOE (annual increases as determined for the full administrator group)

Administrators receive one year of service for every year of service in an administrator role of the same level and one year of service for every 2 years of experience in an administrator role with less responsibility (i.e. two years as an assistant principal equal one year of service toward a principal role). Placement is based on years of experience, with credit up to 10 years which is the top of the pay range.

I. Position Summary

 

The essential function of the position is to provide leadership in the development, organization, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the athletic programs.  The Athletic Director works collaboratively to lead members of the staff and communicate effectively with students, parents, members of the community, and colleagues within the Aspen School District as well as other districts. Inherent in the position are responsibilities for planning, curriculum development, program evaluation, personnel and financial management.

 

II: Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administer the school athletic code in a fair and consistent manner within the intent of the code and the missions of the school and the Aspen School District
  • Ensure District adherence to all CHSAA and district policies, administrative rules, procedures and codes relating to participation in athletics
  • Hire, supervise, and annually evaluate all coaching staff
  • Prepare and manage a master budget for all athletic programs
  • Supervise and maintain athletic equipment inventories
  • Prepare a master sports calendar that includes conference and non-conference games/events
  • Coordinate gyms, building and athletic field use with district/city facilities and maintain the district building use calendar for athletic events
  • Coordinate and manage athletic field and facility requests by outside organizations and inform the High School Administration and/or the District Office as necessary
  • Coordinate gym and field use for practices and games and give final clearance for use of either the gym or the athletic field
  • Monitor and evaluate all head coaches and hold head coaches accountable for evaluating assistant coaches.  Evaluations should be shared with High School Administration following each athletic season
  • Work with coaching staff and transportation director to schedule all athletic departure times and provide bus supervision with appropriate paperwork
  • Manage travel arrangements and overnight accommodations for players or athletic teams and coaches
  • Seek and recommend suitable competition for all non-conference events/games
  • Manage officials and all non-conference contest contracts
  • Secure game workers for athletic contests and submit the list of workers to the coach prior to the event
  • Coordinate collection of rosters for program information as needed
  • Submit athletic expense request for payment of coaches, officials, and other workers to payroll with appropriate paperwork
  • Supervise & prepare for all home athletic contests; must be the administrator on duty
  • Evaluate all athletic programs on an annual basis, making recommendations for improvement to the Building Principal and Superintendent (or designee) when necessary
  • Meet with, orient, and provide in-service training for all coaches within 3 weeks prior to the sports season and hold an evaluation conference with all coaches within 3 weeks after the conclusion of their sport season
  • Manage the resolution of problems, issues, and concerns that may arise between coaches and athletic programs
  • Provide a channel through which students and the community may express their concerns about an athletic program or coach
  • Collect, file, and notify athletes and coaches regarding student eligibility as it pertains to CHSAA requirements and athletic codes of conduct
  • Collect and maintain on file, properly completed and current physical exam card for every student participating in athletics
  • Distribute and maintain on file athletic training rules and codes of conduct signed by students participating in athletics
  • Coordinate ordering of uniforms, letters, and other awards
  • Coordinate postseason awards ceremonies
  • Coordinate and run the athletic signing ceremony each spring
  • Collaborate with the AHS Booster Club; attend all Booster club meetings
  • Attend athletic conference meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Ability to develop and maintain rapport and effective relationships with adolescents and adults contacted in carrying out duties and responsibilities by using courtesy, diplomacy, collaboration, cooperation and professional conduct.
  • Technology proficiency skills: Familiarity with facilities technology to support the athletic program. Demonstrated knowledge of computers for word processing, data management, information retrieval, video and audio presentations, and communications.
  • Legal and ethical awareness abilities: Understanding school policies, regulations, and ethical considerations. Ability to act in ways that directly support the missions of Aspen High School and the Aspen School District on a consistent basis.
  • Interpersonal skills: Building positive relationships with students, staff, and parents. 
  • Budgeting and resource management skills: Managing school finances effectively.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion for all students.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends. Duties may require traveling to athletic events. Duties may require working extended hours. 

 

IV: Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Possess or be able to obtain an initial or professional Colorado administrator's license within the first 3 months of hire.
  • 3 years coaching experience.

V: Preferred Qualifications 

  • Prior Athletic Director experience
  • Secondary teaching experience
  • College athletics experience (athlete and/or coaching)

 VI: Work Environment

  • Office environment; exposure to computer screens 
  • Gymnasium and field/ outdoor settings. 
  • Mostly clean and comfortable surroundings

VII: Essential Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, occasionally stoop, kneel, climb, and crouch.
  • The employee is frequently required to rise from a seated position; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and occasionally, balance.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
