Aspen School District is seeking a qualified Assistant Principal for Aspen High School to start the 2025/26 school year.


Position Title:
High School Assistant Principal

Department: Aspen High School

Reports to: Aspen High School Principal

Classification: Salaried, Full-time Exempt

Contract Period: 210 Days as determined annually

Salary: $100,000 - $125,000 starting salary DOE (annual increases as determined for the full administrator group)

Administrators receive one year of service for every year of service in an administrator role of the same level and one year of service for every 2 years of experience in an administrator role with less responsibility (i.e. two years as an assistant principal equal one year of service toward a principal role). Placement is based on years of experience, with credit up to 10 years which is the top of the pay range.

I: Position Summary


The essential function of the position is to provide support to the instructional process with specific duties assigned by the Principal as established in the working relationship between Principal and Assistant Principal. The High School Assistant Principal directs assigned programs and services at the high school, providing information and serving as a resource to others; supervises and evaluates assigned staff; coordinates school activities; and addresses issues, situations and/or problems that arise on campus with enrolled students.


II: Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list represents the essential tasks performed by the position. These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Employees will be required to perform other duties as assigned.

  • Manages a variety of school administrative functions (e.g. student disciplinary policy, school schedule, assigned personnel, etc.) for the purpose of enforcing school, district and state policy and maintaining safety and efficiency of school operations.
  • Supports principal for the purpose of providing assistance with administrative functions, duties, and responsibilities while maintaining an effective and high performing school.
  • Intervenes in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for the purpose of assisting students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
  • Chairs meetings (e.g. safety, school/district committees, etc.) for the purpose of coordinating activities and ensuring that outcomes achieve school, district and/or state objectives.
  • Evaluates assigned personnel for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for professional growth, and achieving overall objectives of school's curricula.
  • Facilitates communication between and among personnel, students and/or parents for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems, and/or resolving conflicts.
  • Facilitates meetings, processes, etc. for the purpose of meeting curriculum guidelines and/or ensuring that state and local mandates are achieved.
  • Facilitates the development, communication implementation, and evaluation of quality learning for the purpose of enhancing excellence, equality and equity for staff and students.
  • Implements policies, procedures and/or processes for the purpose of providing direction and/or complying with federal, state, and/or local mandated requirements.
  • Administers personnel policies.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Presents information (e.g. budget overviews, accounting processes, distribution formulas, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback, and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
  • Represents the school within community forums for the purpose of maintaining ongoing community support for educational goals and/or assisting with issues related to the school environment.
  • Serves as a member of the district-wide leadership team.
  • Set priorities, working as part of a team, working with frequent interruptions.
  • Creates a positive school climate for students, staff and community.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with the local community and business partners.
  • Attends training, conferences and workshops as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisors for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the school.

  • Leadership skills: The ability to guide and motivate staff, students, and parents towards achieving school goals. Formulates goals that reflect the organization’s strategic theme and include specific, measurable outcomes instead of just completing activities.
  • Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, including active listening, to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving skills: Identifying and addressing issues that arise within the school environment.
  • Decision-making skills: Making informed decisions based on data and considering all perspectives.
  • Conflict resolution skills: Mediating disagreements between students, staff, and parents in a constructive manner.
  • Curriculum development skills: Understanding and overseeing the school curriculum to ensure alignment with educational standards; Understand IB Approaches to Teaching, Learning and Assessment.
  • Staff management and evaluation skills: Evaluating teacher performance, providing feedback, and supporting professional development. Be adept in coaching and mentoring for Inquiry and Conceptual Based teaching methods.
  • Community engagement skills: Building positive relationships with parents, local businesses, and community organizations.
  • Technology proficiency skills: Familiarity with educational technology tools to support teaching and learning including learning management systems/platforms.
  • Legal and ethical awareness: Understanding school policies, regulations, confidentiality, and ethical considerations.
  • Interpersonal skills: Building positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion for all students.
  • Must have the ability to participate in Aspen High School’s Experiential Education (Ex Ed) Program. The assistant principal is required to lead students on an Ex Ed course, accompany other school leaders on a minimum of a week long course during Ex Ed week.

IV: Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess or be able to obtain an initial or professional Colorado principal's license within the first 3 months of hire.

V: Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in Educational Administration

    • Three (3) years of successful experience as a secondary teacher
    • Previous K-12 Administrator experience
    • Experience with IB Programme Standards and Practices including units of inquiry curriculum development, instruction and assessment

  • Spanish Bilingual

VII: Essential Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and stand.
  • The employee is frequently required to rise from a seated position; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and occasionally, balance.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally move up to 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
