Position Title: Experiential Education/Outdoor Education Guide
Department: Aspen School District
Reports to: Outdoor Education Coordinator
Classification: Part-Time Non-exempt, non-contracted
Compensation: $195 per day
Position Summary:
The Experiential Education Guide is responsible for facilitating meaningful and engaging learning experiences for participants through direct involvement in hands-on guided outdoor activities, primarily rafting. The Ex-Ed Guide plays a crucial role in creating a safe, supportive, and dynamic environment that promotes personal growth, skill development, and a deeper understanding of experiential knowledge.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Program Delivery:
- Facilitate experiential learning activities, including but not limited to: outdoor adventures, team-building exercises, community service projects, simulations, and problem-solving scenarios.
- Adapt program activities to meet the diverse needs, abilities, and learning styles of participants.
- Deliver curriculum content in an engaging and interactive manner.
- Ensure the smooth and safe execution of all program activities.
- Facilitation and Instruction:
- Guide participants through reflective processes to help them connect their experiences to learning outcomes.
- Pose thought-provoking questions and encourage open dialogue.
- Provide constructive feedback and support to participants.
- Manage group dynamics and promote positive group interactions.
- Safety and Risk Management:
- Prioritize the safety and well-being of all participants.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement safety protocols.
- Respond effectively to emergencies and incidents.
- Maintain all necessary certifications (e.g., First Aid/CPR, Wilderness First Responder, etc.).
- Program Development and Logistics:
- Assist in the planning, preparation, and setup of program activities.
- Maintain and organize program equipment and resources.
- Collaborate with other staff members to ensure program quality and consistency.
- Contribute to the ongoing evaluation and improvement of program curriculum and activities.
- Participant Support and Mentorship:
- Establish rapport with participants and create a supportive learning environment.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor for participants.
- Address participant questions, concerns, and needs.
- Promote inclusivity and respect among participants.
Qualifications:
- Education and Experience:
- Prior experience in experiential education, primarily rafting, outdoor leadership, or a related field.
- Experience working with school age children.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Strong facilitation and communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and group management skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work effectively in dynamic environments.
- Knowledge of experiential learning principles and practices.
- Proficiency in relevant activity skills (e.g., hiking, rafting, camping, climbing, etc.).
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Certifications:
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Additional certifications as required by the program (e.g., Wilderness First Responder, Lifeguard, etc.).
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to participate in and lead physically demanding activities.
- Ability to work in outdoor environments in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment as needed.
Additional Requirements:
- Background check clearance.
- Valid driver license (if required).
