What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Educator position at Aspen Science Center?
Summer Guest Educator
The Aspen Science Center’s (ASC) mission is advancing public understanding of science through lifelong discovery, exploration, and education. The Aspen Science Center is recognized as the premier organization promoting and facilitating public understanding of and engagement in science throughout the greater Roaring Fork Valley.
The ASC seeks energetic Guest Educators this summer to join our team in teaching fun, hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) summer camp programs. Based in Carbondale, the ASC provides week-long summer camps from Aspen to Parachute, but is specifically seeking Guest Educators for camps located in Carbondale, Basalt, and Aspen. Guest Educator time commitment may range from teaching just one week of camp, to teaching up to four weeks of camps, depending on experience, availability, and interest-level. Camp group sizes are capped at 15 children per camp, and Guest Educators also work with 1-2 high school or college-age Intern Educators to teach the camps. All camp curriculums are already developed, but Guest Educators have the opportunity to adjust them with the approval of the ASC Education Manager. Additional opportunities to teach hour-long ASC programs throughout the summer on an hourly basis are also available. Minimum BA/BS degree in science, education, or related field. Candidates with experience in Early Childhood/PreK and/or K-5 classroom education are preferred. Residency around the Colorado River Valley (Carbondale to Parachute) is a plus.
Salary is $25-$29/hour, based on experience, and Guest Educators are paid for up to 10 hours of camp planning in addition to the 40 hours a week of camp teaching, up to 50 paid hours total per camp. Mileage reimbursement for travel to/from the camp locations is also provided. ASC employees work with school children, therefore, ASC conducts background checks.
