Job Description
The Lift Mechanic Apprentice assists in the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of ski lifts under the guidance of experienced mechanics. This entry-level role provides hands-on training in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, ensuring lifts operate efficiently and safely for guests and employees. This position reports to the Director of Lift Maintenance.
Essential Job Functions/Key Job Responsibilities
• Safely assist with operation of all ski lifts using lift controls
• Have knowledge of locations of all ski lifts around the mountain
• Understand how to run lift on auxiliary or evacuation diesels
• Perform daily pre-operational inspection of ski lifts
• Inspect tires and belts on detachable lifts
• Assist with maintenance and repairs of ski lifts
• Operate on-mountain vehicles, including pick-up trucks, ATVs, snowmobiles, and side-by-side machines (as required)
• Obtain ASC ATV, Snowmobile certification (as required)
• Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
· Must be 18 years of age or older
· Valid, current and unrestricted driver’s license
· High school degree or equivalent preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
· Basic mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems principles
· Safe use of hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments
· Fundamentals of ski lift operations and components (bullwheels, sheave trains, haul ropes, grips, etc.)
· Workplace safety protocols (OSHA standards, fall protection, lockout/tagout procedures)
· Basic welding and fabrication concepts
· Assist in performing maintenance, inspections, and repairs on ski lifts
· Use diagnostic tools and meters to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues
· Safely operate snowmobiles, ATVs, or utility vehicles
· Work at heights using harnesses, ladders, and lift towers
· Ability to learn technical concepts quickly and apply them in real-world scenarios
· Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety
· Problem-solving mindset to troubleshoot and repair lift components
· Team-oriented attitude with a willingness to take direction and learn from experienced mechanics
· Follows all safety policies and procedures and exercises caution when working
Additional Information
Work Environment and Physical Demands
· Ability to reach, crouch, kneel, stand or be on your feet, kneel and bend for extended periods of time
· Regularly work in adverse conditions and required to use protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials as well as an office environment and may be required to walk on slippery and uneven surfaces
· Must be able to lift, push or pull up to 50 lbs. individually or with assistance (weight limits can vary according to position, but no more than 50)
