Responsibilities
- Design steel structures and concrete foundations for heavy industry using the International Building Code and the incorporated reference codes
- Exercise a level of independent judgment with little to no direction from management
- Work in teams on multi-discipline projects ( Electrical Engineering and Process/Mechanical Engineering are typically the other disciplines)
- Work independently on single discipline projects (e.g. retrofit of corroded members in a structure)
- Consult with other structural engineers to propose solutions for unusual or difficult issues on your projects or the projects of others
- Directly interact with clients on projects.
- Monitor budgets and schedules, and help create them
- Work on multiple projects at once
- Perform field work and observe construction (climbing stairs and walking plant sites)
- Direct drawing creation and check drawings created by designers
- Quality Control review designs created by other engineers and designers
- Light travel - mostly local to Richmond, Virginia
- For senior level engineers:
- Provide conceptual design and final engineering
- Participate in project meetings and act as the structural team lead
- Mentor junior engineers and designers
- Bachelor's degree in a Civil or Structural Engineering
- 3 years of experience (preferably in structural design for heavy industry)
- Licensed as a professional civil or structural engineer in Virginia or the ability to be licensed in Virginia
- Mid to senior-level structural focused engineer, preferably with experience in heavy industry
- Experience with finite element analysis software (RISA, STAAD, RAM, SAP2000, etc) which would translate to an understanding of our commonly used software
- Client's commonly used design programs include RISA 3-D, RISA Foundation, RISA Connection, Excel, Mathcad, AutoCAD, Advanced Steel, Revit, and Hilti Profis
- Excellent people and communication skills (oral and written)
- Ability to take a project from estimation to completion with minimal oversight and involvement from department manager
- Ability to develop ongoing relationships with clients
- Act as project manager on single discipline projects within their department and sometimes small multidiscipline projects
- Able to work with limited project information and formulate assumptions to develop designs
- Experience working with masonry design, architectural codes, OSHA, site civil design, and multidiscipline design
- Experience working with regulatory authorities for building permits
- Ability to create CADD drawings
- Familiarity with using point clouds for designs in existing facilities
- Ability to create material take-offs and construction estimating
- Knowledge of dynamic analysis, modal analysis, and time history analysis
- Prepare calculations for structures supporting vibrating equipment
- Master's degree in Structural/Civil Engineering
