Job Overview:

A Special Education Teacher is responsible for teaching students with disabilities in a variety of settings, providing them with the necessary support to succeed academically and socially. This includes creating and delivering specialized instructional plans, monitoring progress, collaborating with parents and other professionals, and maintaining a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs):
    • Assess students’ learning needs and collaborate with parents, administrators, and other educators to create personalized learning goals.
    • Regularly update and adjust IEPs to reflect students' progress and evolving needs.
  2. Provide Specialized Instruction:
    • Use a variety of teaching methods and materials tailored to the students' abilities and needs.
    • Implement instructional strategies that address a wide range of disabilities (e.g., intellectual disabilities, autism, ADHD, physical disabilities).
  3. Classroom Management:
    • Create a structured and supportive classroom environment conducive to learning.
    • Maintain a positive atmosphere by setting clear rules and providing appropriate consequences for behavior.
  4. Monitor and Assess Student Progress:
    • Use both formal and informal assessments to evaluate students’ progress toward meeting their academic goals.
    • Regularly report on student progress to parents, school administrators, and other educators.
  5. Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with other teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff to ensure that students are receiving the appropriate resources and accommodations.
    • Communicate regularly with parents about their child’s performance, behavior, and progress.
  6. Adapt Curriculum:
    • Modify and adapt general education curriculum to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
    • Ensure that lessons are accessible to all students, regardless of their learning challenges.
  7. Support Social and Emotional Development:
    • Provide counseling and guidance to students to help them develop social skills and cope with emotional challenges.
    • Help students build self-confidence and independence.
  8. Professional Development:
    • Stay current with new teaching strategies, tools, and research in the field of special education.
    • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  9. Compliance and Documentation:
    • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations related to special education.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on students' progress and other relevant data.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • Certification: State certification or licensure in Special Education.
  • Experience: Previous experience working with students with special needs is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to adapt teaching methods to suit diverse learning styles.
    • Patience, empathy, and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficiency in using educational technology and software.
    • Knowledge of disability laws and special education procedures.

Working Conditions:

  • Work typically occurs in a school setting, including both classrooms and specialized learning environments.
  • May involve working with students in one-on-one or small group settings.
  • Interaction with other educators, parents, and school staff is required.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and move students or assist with mobility (depending on students' needs).
  • May require standing, sitting, or moving for extended periods.

Salary : $50 - $55
