Physical Substation Design Engineer Asplundh Engineering Services (AES) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Physical Substation Design Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and engineering of substations, ensuring that all specifications and regulatory standards are met. This position requires strong expertise in both above and below grade design, as well as a thorough understanding of substation equipment, materials, codes, and interdisciplinary applications. This is a hybrid opportunity in our Foxboro, MA location. Key Responsibilities :
- Equipment and Material Specifications :
- Develop and specify equipment for substations, including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnects, and instrument transformers.
- Prepare material specifications for insulators, bus systems, connectors, conduits, enclosures, and substation steel.
- Estimating :
- Conduct cost estimates for engineering, construction, and materials throughout the project lifecycle.
- Above Grade Design :
- Utilize AutoCAD and Microstation for the modeling of substation layouts, elevations, and electrical diagrams.
- Design and detail electrical assemblies, connection details, and substation steel.
- Below Grade Design :
- Create and detail foundation layouts, grounding layouts and details, conduit layouts, and other related designs.
- Work with rebar and anchor bolt specifications.
- Studies and Calculations :
- Perform essential studies such as grounding, lightning, DC / AC loading, battery / charger calculations, voltage drop, and bus / cable ampacity specifications.
- Code Compliance :
- Ensure all designs meet the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), and applicable IEEE standards.
- Cross-Disciplinary Application :
- Collaborate on civil site design including grading plans, drainage plans, drive entrances, and fence installations.
- Coordinate with civil structural engineers for foundations, anchor bolts, and equipment placement.
- Protection & Control Systems :
- Design and specify protection and control equipment, cable requirements, conduit routing, and control house layouts.
- Construction and Outage Planning :
- Assist in construction planning by understanding sequencing and phasing for installations.
