As a Lead Substation Engineer with Asplundh Engineering Services (AES), you will maintain a range of responsibilities involving Substations, including protection and control and physical design. You will assist in completing assignments independently, as well as working closely with other engineering and design team members to fulfill distinct roles across multiple projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop electrical substation drawings including single line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, physical layouts, sections and elevations, and other related details and sketches
- Perform design calculations and analysis such as grounding system analysis, lightning protection, voltage drop, power system sizing (AC and DC), and other industry-standard calculations
- Work closely with designers and drafters to develop drawings of high quality both technically and aesthetically
- Develop technical equipment and construction specifications, work scopes, estimates, and recommendation reports as needed by the project
- Work closely with Engineers to develop foundation and structure drawings, including mounting patterns and equipment layouts.
- Perform site visits and provide on-site technical support during construction and commissioning.
- Research and learn design methods and standards of different customers and potential customers to provide designs and documents in line with their practices.
- Take part in meetings with representatives from clients and other engineering firms.
- Develop strong relationships and establish trusted partnerships with clients.
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
- 5-9 years experience in electrical design involving power systems.
- Professional Engineering License or EIT preferred
- Must be proficient with typical office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Windows
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Strong technical writing skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Comfortable meeting face to face with clients, effective communication skills both written and verbal
- Experience with Protection and Control design, including familiarity with one-line diagrams of several different station configurations.
- Familiarity with ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NEMA, and other industry standards and their applicability to diverse types of substations
- Ability to use drafting software(s) preferred
- Ability and willingness to work occasional extra hours to support clients and deadlines, including weekends
- Must be self-motivated and poses good time management skills to complete tasks and projects with a moderate amount of supervision
