Major Duties And Responsibilities
The Laboratory Technician II will provide support for sample and collection management, services, facility operations, IT and data management, quality management, and project management. The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Performs non-research biological science work in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous biological and environmental agents. Assists with ensuring samples managed by the CDC Biorepository (CBR) are processed and handled correctly to maintain cold-chain and chain-of-custody during all steps of sample disposition (e.g., accessioning, retrieval, transfers, destructions, aliquoting, deliveries).
- Utilizes established LIMS to ensure all required sample data is entered accurately and assists with activities that may require updating records as needed (e.g., annual review). Follows established procedures and provides feedback for updates.
- Assists in sample storage consolidation activities to ensure maximum availability of sample storage.
- Assists in activities to implement strategies for storage expansion and growth. Assist in developing procedures and solutions for storing various sample types (e.g., cryovials, dried blood spot cards, soil and water samples).
- Prepares and delivers written and oral reports to various individuals and groups in informal and formal settings within CBR, the branch, or the division.
- Responds to questions for inclusion in a comprehensive report. Prepare routine reports utilizing charts, graphs, and spreadsheets to report on any metrics, inconsistencies, or other data per established procedures and maintain complete, detailed records of all work performed.
- Ensures compliance with the established quality management system: Fulfills mandatory Biosafety and IT security training requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education And Experience
- Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, basic medical science, or environmental laboratory science, or
- 2-5 years of equivalent experience
- Experience working with established SOPs across molecular and microbiologist techniques.
- Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for the preparation of memos and reports.
- Experience working with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Previous experience working in a similar role.
- Previous experience with "chain of custody" materials and transfers.
- Experience modifying methods based upon evaluation of research results.
- Demonstrated skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts.
- Specific detailed knowledge of quality systems and regulatory requirements, handling of clinical specimens, and aseptic techniques.
- Knowledge of documentation for equipment calibration and validation.
- Knowledge of quality systems and inventory software functions.
- The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
