Special Education Teacher
Reports to: Director of Special Education
Major Responsibilities
- Coordinate, implement, and consult with stakeholders regarding accommodations and modifications per the student’s individualized education plan (IEP).
- Provide modifications for department assessments, projects, and papers per the student’s IEP.
- Participate in the design and evaluation of curriculum and instruction.
- Communicate with parents regarding students’ academic and classroom performance.
- Consistently prepare for class and demonstrate written evidence of preparation including lesson plans in collaboration with the regular education teacher.
- Assist in and administer appropriate educational diagnostic testing as needed.
- Collaborate with the school staff in planning appropriate modifications for special education student success for all of their educational needs.
- Develop strategies to help remediate particular disabilities of children within the regular education classroom.
- Attend parent conferences that may be called by administration, guidance counselor, or the Director of Special Education.
- Complete appropriate state and federal forms as they may pertain to special education students and Individual Education Plans.
- Other duties as assigned. Curriculum, Planning, and Assessment ●Teaches full-time to students with disabilities in grades 9-12. ●Promotes the learning and growth of all students by providing high-quality and coherent instruction; designs and administers authentic and meaningful student assessments. ●Delivers instruction to students in accordance with the Curriculum Frameworks issued by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. ●Adapt general education lessons and teaching methods to meet the needs of students with disabilities. ●Use specialized instructional techniques and materials to accommodate various learning styles and abilities. ●Teach academic subjects, life skills, and vocational skills based on students' IEP goals. ●Work with students individually or in small groups to address specific learning challenges. ●Design learning activities that will relate to content area skills to the real world and apply them to academic & vocational programs where appropriate. ●Develops lesson plans; maintains a weekly syllabus and a daily agenda. ●Maintains or contributes to the online course learning management platform (ie. Google Classroom). ●Takes part in curriculum development and revision. ●Analyzes student performance and growth data, using this data to improve instruction, providing students with constructive feedback on an ongoing basis, and continuously refining learning objectives. ●Use a variety of both formative and summative assessment strategies to allow students to show their understanding Teaching All Students ●Promotes the learning and growth of all students through instructional practices that establish high expectations, create a safe and effective classroom environment, and demonstrate cultural proficiency. ●Provides individual and group instruction appropriate to the needs of the student(s) and differentiates instruction when necessary. ●Accommodates the special needs of individual students. ●Establishes and maintains standards of student conduct to provide an orderly, safe, and productive environment for all students in the classroom. ●Grades and monitors student progress through the use of progress reports and report cards. Family and Community Engagement ●Promotes the learning and growth of all students through effective partnerships with families, caregivers, community members, and organizations. ●Contacts parents to notify them of students’ declining progress, whenever necessary. ●Attends Special Education Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, where the teacher’s presence is required. ●Provides supervision and extra help to students where needed. Professional Culture ●Promotes the learning and growth of all students through ethical, culturally proficient, skilled, and collaborative practice. ●Attends meetings as required by contract. ●Carries out other duties as assigned. Classroom Management •Communicate clear behavioral expectations. •Maintain classroom routines and procedures without significant loss of instructional time. •Adhere to the Classroom Management Plan. •Support and adhere to the disciplinary policies and procedures of the school. •Attend to safety requirements. •Take disciplinary action appropriate to the behavioral infraction. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: ●This is a ten-month, Full-time (1.0 FTE), school-year position (187 days). ●Initial salary will be established by the Superintendent-Director in accordance with the Teachers’ Contract. ●Fringe benefits as outlined in the Teachers’ Contract. ●A criminal background check, including fingerprinting, is required. ●The successful applicant must undergo mandatory ethics training and pass an online ethics test developed by the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission.
