Controller Position Summary:
The Controller is responsible for providing consistent leadership and oversight of the local accounting operations of our growing businesses that provides industrial and professional services across various industries including construction, oil & gas, landfills and public utilities.
The Controller will be responsible for and provide advice on all high-level and managerial accounting issues while overseeing the local financial activities of the company. The position will report to the CFO and the President. This is a very hands-on position but also requires knowledge of a wide range of technical financial matters.
The Controller will ensure that the company has the systems, processes and procedures in place to support effective finance and accounting operations. The Controller will work closely with operations team members, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures, but also to explore how the Finance function can support operational activities. The Controller will partner with the President, CFO and General Manager and their staffs to enhance the integration of Finance across all administrative functions.
Controller Responsibilities include:
- Establish and maintain systems and controls to ensure the integrity of all systems, processes and data relating to the company’s financial performance.
- Prepare monthly and year-end financial analysis to identify trends and factors impacting performance favorably and unfavorably.
- Collaborate with the members of ownership and management team to provide financial insights and support strategic initiatives
- Manage and oversee accounting staff including: Accounts Payable\Purchasing\Inventory, Payroll, Billing\Accounts Receivable
- Monitor accounts receivable aging, accounts payable and inventory including
o Account balances, trade terms, collection activities, inventory levels
o Coordination with CFO on cash management
o Monitor and supervise monthly credit card activity and related reporting
- Responsible for various state and local tax compliance matters including sales tax with support from CFO and outside CPA firm
- Coordinate all discipline’s efforts associated with identifying and obtaining required interim insurance coverage when necessary and annual policy renewals
- Prepare and file new and maintain all existing state level regulatory compliance including: certificates of authority, business and contractors licenses
Leadership
- Ongoing development of a qualified, competent staff with skills and performance sufficient to maintain quality and meet deadlines. Clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals. Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
- Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a skilled team. Ability to motivate teams to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects. Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings.
- Demonstrate keen analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills, which allow for strategic data interpretation vs. simple reporting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to ownership and senior management
- Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
Controller Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years’ experience preferred in a supervisory level finance or accounting position including management responsibilities in the service sector.
- 3 or more year’s public accounting auditing experience, preferably with a large regional accounting firm. Thorough knowledge of GAAP
- Experience in the construction and oil and gas industry preferred but not required. Project based accounting and job costing experience is also preferred.
- Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
- CPA is preferred but not required.
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, proactive, and a hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO, the responsibility for finance
- Strong systems and process orientation, with willingness to leverage technology to solve problems and effect improvements
- Ability to be sensitive to and practice the confidentiality requirements of a privately owned company
- Proficiency with certified payrolls and multi-state payroll experience is preferred
- Extensive knowledge in Word, Excel and Outlook and all forms of data entry
This Controller position is full-time, permanent and in-office. Ability to work overtime as required including occasional evenings and weekends to meet objectives and deadlines.
