Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU, Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union (BMU), and the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), the Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Operation Programs and Services (OPS), Sustainability and student government.
Associated Students is now hiring for the position of WREC Student Lifeguard. This is a part-time, non-benefited student position that will work no more than 20 hours per week while school is in session. The pay rate is $16.91 per hour. The schedule for this position is based upon department needs and is subject to change at any time. To be eligible for student employment, you must be enrolled at CSU, Chico and maintain at least 6 units (undergraduate student) or 4 units (graduate student) throughout the course of employment.

WREC Student Lifeguard
SUMMARY
Under supervision of the WREC Aquatics Coordinator, the Student Lifeguard is responsible for enforcing rules and regulations, which concern the health and safety of WREC patrons, while in the swimming area and is expected to perform other related duties as required. All aquatics staff must maintain current status in all required certifications.
TYPICAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides active surveillance and implements preventative lifeguarding techniques.
- Actively enforces the facility’s rules and regulations in order to maintain safety and to prevent accidents or loss of life.
- Executes rescues of persons in distress; administers first aid and resuscitation as necessary. Activates the designated emergency response system. Completes accident and or incident reports as necessary.
- Completes records as required.
- Takes responsibility for (rather than assisting with) documenting accidents and applications of first aid.
- Sets up or replaces equipment as needed, including the placement of lane lines, covering of pool and spa, and positioning of furniture.
- Performs basic daily maintenance, i.e.; vacuuming, brushing, and hosing deck.
- Assists and officiates at special events.
- Other duties may be assigned.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office, outdoors, and equipment room environments. Exposure to outdoor elements, wet surfaces, moderate to loud noise levels, dust, heat, and toxic substances; exposure to electrical, and mechanical equipment; contact with staff, vendors, outside contractors, and the campus community. Hours of this position can vary based on business needs.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Stand and walk for extended periods; swim (test required); manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; verbal and written communication; reach, grasp, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of:
- Aquatic rescue techniques.
- CPR and First Aid techniques.
- Signs, symptoms, and treatment of sudden illnesses.
- Principles of aquatic surveillance, i.e.; Scanning, Rotations, Zones of Coverage.
Ability to:
- Perform aquatic rescues according to level of training.
- Respond to emergencies calmly and effectively.
- Complete Lifeguard prerequisite skills (300 yard continuous swim, 2 minute tread without the use of arms, brick retrieval in 1 minute 40 seconds).
- Enforce and explain rules and policies in a polite and assertive manner.
- Maintain focus for an extended period of time.
- Communicate effectively with customers and staff.
- Exercise judgement to provide a safe and welcoming experience to customers.
- Attend monthly in service trainings.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 months lifeguarding experience –
- Currently enrolled in 6 units for undergraduate or 4 units for graduate at California State University, Chico required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Lifeguarding Certification – American Red Cross preferred
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent
- AED Certification
- First Aid Certification
- Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel – May be acquired within 1 year of employment
