Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU, Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union (BMU), and the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), the Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Operation Programs and Services (OPS), Sustainability and student government.

 

Associated Students is now hiring for the position of WREC Student Safety Instructor. This is a part-time, non-benefited student position that will work no more than 20 hours per week while school is in session.  The pay rate is $17.34 per hour. The schedule for this position is based upon department needs and is subject to change at any time. To be eligible for student employment, you must be enrolled at CSU, Chico and maintain at least 6 units (undergraduate student) or 4 units (graduate student) throughout the course of employment.

WREC Student Safety Instructor

This position is responsible for teaching Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid course in accordance with the American Red Cross and WREC procedures and policies, including the establishment and maintenance of good customer service and providing assistance in a courteous manner at all times.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid courses according to the schedule developed
  • Complete and submit American Red Cross course records sheets within 72 hours of completion of course.
  • Become familiar with all policies, rules, guidelines and regulations as described in the WREC employee handbook.
  • Follow and adhere to all American Red Cross policies and procedures.
  • Be professional and tactful while conducting courses.
  • Attend all in-service training sessions.
  • Convey a professional image through a positive attitude and proper attire.
  • Wear approved staff uniform while on duty.
  • Inspect facility for cleanliness and perform cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Remain flexible in terms of shift scheduling to accommodate the changing needs of the Wildcat Recreation Center programs and user groups.
  • Become familiar with all WREC policies, programs and philosophy to better answer questions from users.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an office, outdoors, and equipment room environments.  Exposure to outdoor elements, wet surfaces, moderate to loud noise levels, dust, heat, and toxic substances; exposure to electrical, and mechanical equipment; contact with staff, vendors, outside contractors, and the campus community.  Hours of this position can vary based on business needs.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Stand and walk for extended periods; swim (test required); manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; verbal and written communication; reach, grasp, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of:

  • American Red Cross course content in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid.
  • Teaching practices and principles.
  • American Red Cross course record submission.

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate aquatic rescues.
  • Use digital media to present course content.
  • Provide clear and constructive feedback to class participants.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and staff.
  • Exercise judgement to provide a safe and welcoming experience to participants.
  • Attend monthly in service trainings.

 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Three (3) months lifeguarding experience.
  • Currently enrolled in 6 units for undergraduate or 4 units for graduate at California State University, Chico required.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Required to teach ALL Courses:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification (May be acquired within 60 days of employment)
  • American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent(May be acquired within 60 days of employment)
  • American Red Cross AED Certification (May be acquired within 60 days of employment)
  • American Red Cross First Aid Certification (May be acquired within 60 days of employment)
  • Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel – May be acquired within 1 year of employment (May be acquired within 60 days of employment)
  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Bridge – May be acquired within 60 days of employment (May be acquired within 60 days of employment)

Required to teach ONLY First Aid/CPR/AED Courses:

  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification (May be acquired within 60 days of employment)
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Certification (May be acquired within 60 days of employment)
