JOB TITLE: Patient Care Coordinator
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for being a public relations agent and assisting patients with registration, scheduling, check-in and check-out including but not limited to questions on insurance, verifying insurance benefits, answering questions about their account.
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for being a public relations agent and coordinating patient registration, scheduling, check-in and check-out. Acts as an extension of the business office by verifying insurance benefits, providing account information and collecting payments as needed. Supports clinical operations by assisting with obtaining health histories and release of information. Abides by corporate compliance and HIPAA policies; participates in annual training. Maintains confidentiality and abides by company rules and policies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to Business Office Analyst
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Greets customers in polite, prompt, helpful manner. Provides any necessary instructions and directions.
Informs appropriate department/person of person's arrival.
2. Ensures patient charts and encounter forms are available and that appropriate referrals are documented.
3. Updates patient demographic, employer and insurance information, collects co-pays, provides any necessary forms needing completion, obtains signatures as necessary.
4. Answers phones in pleasant manner and deals with customer needs expeditiously.
5. Schedules appointments by computer for office visits and procedures.
6. Follows clinic protocol in alerting appropriate personnel in emergency situations.
7. Monitors patients and waiting area to minimize waiting time.
8. Maintains clean, orderly waiting area, including appropriate reading materials.
9. Balances cash box daily.
10. Performs related work as required.
11. Supplements office staff as reception tasks permit by assisting with photocopying, computer input/typing, scheduling laboratory or radiology work as directed.
12. Follows-up with insurance companies ensuring that coverage is approved.
13. Identifies and corrects patient account and insurance errors.
14. Answers patient questions, inquiries, and concerns regarding their accounts.
15. Works with clinic management on patient billing and credit issues.
16. Assists with answering telephone, screening calls, and taking messages.
17. Attends meetings as required.
18. Other duties as assigned
The job holder must demonstrate competencies applicable to the job position.
EDUCATION: High school diploma.
EXPERIENCE: One year work experience, preferably in a medical office setting.

KNOWLEDGE:
1. Knowledge of medical terminology.
2. Knowledge of insurance industry and billing procedures.
3. Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation to type correspondence.
SKILLS:
1. Skill in using computer programs and applications.
2. Skill in typing a minimum of 40 wpm.
ABILITIES:
1. Ability to read, understand, and follow oral, and written instruction.
2. Ability to sort and file materials correctly by alphabetic or numeric systems.
3. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Work may require hand dexterity for office machine operation, stooping and bending to files and supplies, mobility to complete errands or deliveries, or sitting for extended periods of time. Manual dexterity for using a calculator and computer keyboard.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment. Involves frequent contact with staff, patients, and the public. Work may be stressful at times. Contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people.
