A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer
As a Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure. You will manage projects and guide your team through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and answer questions during construction.
Qualifications of a Principal Engineer :
- A Professional Engineering license in MA
- A bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering
- At least 15 years of engineering experience developing construction documents and / or public agency construction administration
- At least 5 years serving in a project and / or design management role
- A broad knowledge base in civil engineering, with specific experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling, and design of accessible public spaces
- A proven track record of delivering multiple large / complex projects on time and on budget
- Experience in preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
- General experience leading multidisciplinary teams
- Interest in multimodal and active transportation design
- Experience in managing staff
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads)
- Experience managing engineering projects in the Northeast
- Experience in preparing proposals and scope / fees
- Interest in business development

Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer
This full-time position typically works a hybrid schedule of 40 hours a week, with at least two to three days a week in the office.
