Summary Job Goal: The Tribal Justice Program Coordinator provides direct services to the villages in enhancing or creation of tribal courts under the directive of the Department Director, including tribal court program planning, program reporting, and assistance with training and technical assistance to tribal court staff. This position, with the assistance of the Department Director and the Tribal Justice Attorney, will research and assist in the drafting of tribal court policy and documents for tribal court use and will assist member tribes and work directly with the assigned Tribal Court Assessment Team under the guidance of the federal partners. Other duties include providing clerical and office support for the Tribal Justice Department (TJD). The Tribal Justice Program Coordinator will work with the Director to seek funding sources for the tribal courts in conjunction with the tribes.
Performance Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Coordinates communication and dissemination of decisions, information flow, and program administration.
  • Coordinates and disseminates correspondence between the tribal courts, tribes, and AVCP.
  • Documents communications with villages and service agencies.
  • Documents communications with state, federal and tribal agencies.
  • Ensures the administrative staff timelines for projects and programs are met by calendaring the events and deadlines for individual projects, assignments and grant requirements.
  • Maintains office supplies and filing system for the Director.
  • Picks up and checks mail.
  • Seeks funding for tribal court creation and enhancement.
  • Arranges travel for Tribal Court functions. Includes, but not limited to, airline and travel reservations, hotel accommodations, ground transportation, registration/scheduling of appointments when necessary and arranging per diem.
  • Assists Director in tribal court assessment process, coordinating with tribal, federal and state agencies.
  • Assists the Director in planning departmental events. Includes, but not limited to: finding and securing training sites, designing and setting up meeting rooms, communicating with outside agencies, developing announcements, preparing meeting and training manuals, assisting presenters and documenting meetings as necessary.
  • Provides ongoing communication with program facilitators, partnering agencies and the Tribal Justice Director.
  • Assists the Director in designing the Tribal Court development program through trainings, website, and other outreach educational materials.
  • Provides assistance in setting up Tribal Court training, conferences and workshops.
  • Assist Tribes in developing and sustaining Tribal Courts.
  • Coordinate technical and legal assistance with the Tribal Justice Director.
  • Assists the Director in management and reporting of grant/funding activities.
  • Travel to rural communities routinely and frequently.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of the department and clientele.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Strong inter-personal skills are required. Must be willing to travel frequently. Familiarity with Yup'ik lifestyles is preferred. Fluency in Yup'ik is strongly preferred. The position is subject to Native Preference per P.L. 93-638. Proficiency in office and computer equipment and software is required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A bachelor's or an associate degree in a related field is preferred. Minimum of two to three (2-3) years of progressive experience in working with tribes is required. Must be proficient in grant reporting and budget reviews. Must have experience with the following programs: Microsoft Office—Word; Excel; Publisher; Power Point; Outlook.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid Alaska Driver's License and a clear driving record.
