What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fiber Optic Network Engineer position at ASSYST, Inc.?
ASSYST is seeking for a Fiber Optic Network Engineer to support our client's Fiber Optic Team in Arlington, VA.
The Fiber Optic Network Engineer will support the Fiber Optic team under the direction of department managers and work closely with Fiber and Network engineers. The role involves interpreting and creating engineering drawings, supporting field activities, preparing cost estimates, assisting in contract management, and analyzing technical data.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and draft project construction plans, focusing on designing inside and outside plant conduit paths.
- Develop checklists to evaluate fiber optic construction plans.
- Coordinate activities with DTS Network teams, property owners, County departments, schools, Dominion Virginia Power, Verizon, and Comcast for the construction of fiber optic facilities.
- Track and maintain the status of projects and tasks using Jira and MS Project.
- Manage records of fiber optic cable usage and issuance, annotate construction drawings, and update the County’s Fiber Management System.
- Prepare and submit project permit applications, run analytical reports, and perform OTDR testing to troubleshoot system performance issues.
- Create forms and documentation using MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat, and update County SharePoint sites.
Qualifications:
- Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent or 15 years of direct experience and training.
- Preferred: Degree in Engineering, Geographic Information Systems, or Computer Science.
- Ability to interpret and draft engineering drawings/specifications.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Jira, and Visio; knowledge of Adobe Acrobat.
- Strong English communication skills, both written and oral.
- Physical ability to walk long distances, open handholes/manholes, and climb ladders.
- U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the U.S.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Proven experience in developing communication systems and supporting inside and outside plant construction projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or ESRI-based GIS, MS Project.
- Knowledge of Telcordia SR-1421 (Blue Book – Manual of Construction).
- BICSI RCDD certification (Registered Communications Distribution Designer).
