The incumbent will be broadly recognized for raising the external visibility of Astellas as an innovative company. In alignment with the overall strategic plan, the role will develop the sub-functional strategy and lead the execution of mechanistic biology and modality innovation external alliances to raise the quality and impact of Astellas research.

Essential Job Responsibilities
- Overall responsibility for exploring and implementing novel open innovation models and networks ex-Japan with a particular focus on Boston.
- Sets and leads the Open Innovation US overall strategy and be overall responsible for I-Lab mechanistic biology and modality innovation strategy linked to tangible outcomes and deliverables.
- Initiate and oversee I-Lab’s major R&D alliances and collaborations in ROW estimated ~ 10-15 OKY/Yr working closely with the Head of I-lab and the Head of Therapeutics Accelerator.
- Continuously assess emerging scientific & technological advancements to shape future direction of I-Lab
- Foster a collaborative, transparent, and creative team environment that drives innovation and invention.
- Manage team priorities, resources, and investments in alignment with the company's overall I-Lab strategy and objectives and manage Cambridge Saku Lab.
- This position is expected to initially lead, manage, and mentor ~10 reports
- Advanced degree, MD or PhD, in Life Sciences or related field
- More than 5 years’ experience at a Senior (VP level) leadership role in pharma / biotech external innovation with base in the US
- More than 15 years of experience in drug discovery pharma or biotech with interdisciplinary global experience, including strategy and execution, and matrix team management.
- Deep understanding of advancements in drug discovery, emerging technologies, and industry trends, and apply this knowledge to enhance research strategies.
- Proven ability to respectfully challenge and influence senior leaders.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to provide strategic direction and drive results.
- Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong network and credibility with US/ UK top academics and institutions
- Strong communication and influencing skills
- This position is based in Boston
