The Position
ATAC has an opening for a Research Engineer. This is a full-time position located on-site at the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) William J. Hughes Technical Center (WJHTC) in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated member of ATAC’s WJHTC team and will support various research efforts. These efforts will focus on aviation safety including rotorcraft-specific issues, and will also include developing and evaluating methods for analyzing, processing, and filtering various forms of air traffic control data from existing FAA systems to support the development of analytical tools and prediction models.
Responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating with other in-house FAA researchers and laboratory personnel, developers, programmers, and other contract support as well as research partners such as NASA, MITRE, and other universities.
- Developing analytical tools to support/enhance FAA systems.
- Developing models to predict and evaluate the performance of rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft, FAA systems, and programs related to air traffic optimization and safety.
- Supporting data analyses including automating analysis processes and report generation.
- Supporting testing and data collection efforts, and enhancing capabilities in these areas.
- Documenting and reporting on work products.

Qualifications
ATAC is looking for a self-starter that can work independently and complete projects with minimum oversight. They must be adaptable and able to learn new tools and technologies as necessary to meet customer needs. Additionally, ATAC is seeking open-minded people who have an interest in developing knowledge in the aviation domain and motivation to be a part of the FAA’s efforts to make air travel more convenient and dependable, while ensuring flights are as safe, secure, and hassle-free as possible.
Required attributes include:
- A PhD degree in Aerospace Engineering or a related field
- Research background/experience
- Experience with modeling rotorcraft dynamics
- Experience in the development of rotorcraft safety metrics
- Experience with aircraft flight data monitoring equipment and data
- Experience with helicopter flight simulators, including methods to improve their fidelity
- Experience with modeling aircraft noise and emissions
- Strong analytical skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal relations skills
- Expertise with MATLAB, SQL, Python and/or C
Desired attributes include:
- Expertise with AEDT, JMP, and FLOPS
- Knowledge of current air traffic management systems
- Knowledge of aviation environmental issues and models
- Pilot license
