Purpose of Job
The purpose of this position is to create a positive, supportive, creative and safe learning environment during the day camp programs sponsored by the Leisure Services Department. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to participating in and conducting activities and programs. Ensures safety of all assigned campers, assists with setup, cleanup, and minor cleaning of program and restroom areas.

  • Ability to supervise campers ages 6-12 is preferred for camp positions.
  • Experience working with teens ages 13-15 is required when assigned to teen camps or Teen in Action.
Job Related Requirements:
WORK SCHEDULE: Camp training will be scheduled Tuesday through Friday the last week in May. Shifts will be scheduled between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm Monday-Friday. These are seasonal positions requiring your attendance at work. Additional staff is not hired for covering absences. Requests to be away from camp for more than three (3) consecutive days will be denied.

May be required to work on religious holidays.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Must work cooperatively with others.

When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.

If hired for a Summer position, you will be REQUIRED to attend an Orientation.

Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Six months of experience working with children in a camp, daycare, or other recreational setting where child supervision was required; OR one full season of day camp experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must possess current first aid and CPR (valid through end of Camp Season) by start of camp. Training is provided.

Some high school required.

High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

When Assigned to Counselor In Training (CIT)

  • Experience working with children in a camp, daycare, babysitting or other recreational setting or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must be age 14 or older prior to the start of summer camp.
  • One full season of day camp work experience or as a camp participant preferred.

When Assigned to Camp Director position at Sandy Creek, Memorial Park and Bear Hollow Zoo

  • Age 21 or over preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Must possess a current valid driver's license

When Assigned to Counselor position at Sandy Creek

  • Must be 18 years of age or older

When Assigned to Teen Camp Supervisor position at Sandy Creek

  • Two full seasons recreational, day camp programming or curriculum planning and implementation required; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must possess a current valid driver's license
  • Previous experience with 13–15-year-old participants is required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred

When Assigned to ACTIVE Teen Camp Counselor

  • Must possess a current valid driver's license
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

When Assigned to ACTIVE Teen Camp Director

  • Must possess a current valid driver's license
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Supervisory experience preferred

When assigned as a driver to any camp location: Must possess a current driver's license.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Attends training and orientation as required.

Creates a positive, creative and supportive learning environment.

Leads and conducts activities and programs with assigned campers.

Completes accident and incident forms as required.

Maintains and cares for equipment used during programs and activities.

Maintains alertness to ensure camper safety.

Performs other related duties as required.

When Assigned to a Camp Director position
Oversees daily operations and supervision of participants/camp staff.

Trains, supervises, and evaluates camp staff.

Must be able to plan and create camp curriculum prior to start of camp.

Interacts and provides communication with participants' parents/guardians.

Plans and assigns daily activities.

Ensures the creation of a positive, creative and supportive learning environment.

Oversees volunteers and interns

Coordinates use of supplies and facilities.

Conducts safety/operational inspections of camp related equipment (including vehicles used) and makes adjustments as needed.

Handles discipline problems as required.

When assigned to Sandy Creek Day Camp
Must be able to follow American Camp Association standards to maintain camp accreditation.

When assigned to Sandy Creek Teen Camp Supervisor
Must possess a valid Georgia Driver's License to operate a 12 passenger van.

Must be able to lead outdoor activities and be certified in canoeing and archery. (Training provided by camp.)

Must be able to teach using wild animals, including snakes and insects, in an educational setting.

Must be able to lead off-site day trips that include hiking, swimming, and outdoor activities.

Must be familiar with the principles of outdoor education when working at Sandy Creek Park and familiar with environmental principles when working at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

Must be able to understand and implement American Camp Association standards to maintain camp accreditation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of assigned division in the Leisure Services Department.

Knowledge of management and recreational practices, policies, and procedures as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities.

Knowledge of all applicable laws, ordinances, policies, standards and regulations pertaining to the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Ability to effectively communicate and interact with subordinates, management, employees, members of the general public and all other groups involved in the activities of the Athens-Clarke County Government as they relate to the Leisure Services department.

Ability to effectively handle human relations and technical subjects.

Ability to handle the required mathematical calculations.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, scanner, copier, calculator, fax, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move, or carry objects or materials. This position requires: walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of medium work.

DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, and to utilize and determine percentages.

FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with construction, mechanical, and electrical tools.

MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands, fingers, and eyes accurately in using construction, mechanics, carpentry, landscaping, plumbing, and electrical equipment. Requires the ability to lift, push, bend and pull objects or materials using body parts as the position necessitates.

MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as a computer, copying machine, calculator, scanner, fax etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

COLOR DISCRIMINATION: May require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.

PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone, two-way radio.
