Reports To : Activities Director / Supervisor

Summary :

The Activities Assistant is responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of therapeutic recreational activities for residents of the nursing home. This role aims to enhance residents' physical, cognitive, social, and emotional well-being, promoting a vibrant and engaging community environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Assist the Activities Director / Supervisor in developing and implementing a monthly activity calendar that caters to the diverse interests and abilities of the residents.
  • Lead or co-lead individual and group activities, including but not limited to :
  • Games (board games, card games, bingo, etc.)
  • Arts and crafts
  • Music and entertainment (singing, dancing, live performances)
  • Exercise and movement programs (chair exercises, walking programs)
  • Cognitive stimulation activities (reminiscing, puzzles, trivia)
  • Social events and outings (parties, holiday celebrations, community trips)
  • Spiritual activities (religious services, bible study)
  • Encourage resident participation in activities and provide individualized support as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of resident participation in activities, noting their responses and preferences.
  • Assist in the set-up and clean-up of activity areas and materials.
  • Transport residents to and from activities, ensuring their safety and comfort.
  • Observe residents for changes in mood, behavior, or physical condition and report any concerns to the appropriate staff members.
  • Collaborate with other departments (nursing, dietary, etc.) to ensure the overall well-being of the residents.
  • Maintain a safe and clean activity environment.
  • Adhere to all facility policies and procedures, including those related to resident rights, confidentiality, and infection control.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Activities Director / Supervisor.

Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience working with older adults or in a recreational setting is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine interest in working with seniors.
  • Ability to lead and motivate groups of people.
  • Creativity, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to perform the essential duties of the position, including lifting, bending, and assisting residents with mobility.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of recreational activities and their benefits for older adults.
  • Ability to adapt activities to meet the individual needs and abilities of residents.
  • Skill in organizing and implementing activities.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work effectively with residents, families, and staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow directions and work independently.
