Responsibilities
- Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough physical examinations, assess medical histories, and order and interpret diagnostic tests to diagnose and evaluate sports-related injuries or conditions.
- Treatment Planning: Collaborate with sports medicine physicians to develop individualized treatment plans for patients, including recommending rehabilitation exercises, medications, or surgical interventions when necessary.
- Rehabilitation: Supervise and administer rehabilitation programs to aid in the recovery of athletes, focusing on strengthening, flexibility, and functional training to optimize performance and minimize the risk of re-injury.
- Injections and Procedures: Administer joint injections, corticosteroid injections, and other medical procedures as directed by physicians, ensuring proper techniques and patient comfort.
- Patient Education: Educate patients on injury prevention, proper nutrition, and overall health and wellness to enhance their understanding of their condition and improve long-term outcomes.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, documenting patient assessments, treatment plans, progress, and outcomes in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Collaboration: Work closely with physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate comprehensive care for patients, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach.
- Emergency Care: Provide immediate medical attention and first aid at sporting events or practices when necessary, assessing and stabilizing injuries until further medical assistance arrives.
- Research and Continuing Education: Stay current with advances in sports medicine through ongoing education and research, applying new knowledge to improve patient care and treatment strategies.
- Compliance: Adhere to all legal and ethical standards, including maintaining patient confidentiality and ensuring that practice is conducted within the boundaries of state and federal regulations.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and successful completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
- Licensure: Current, valid state licensure as a Physician Assistant, and certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Experience: Previous experience in sports medicine or orthopedics is preferred but not mandatory. New graduates with a strong interest in sports medicine are encouraged to apply.
- Skills: Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-based healthcare environment.
