Do you enjoy working with teenagers? The Athens Regional Library System is hiring a full-time Library Lead Assistant for the Athens-Clarke County Library Teen Services Department. We seek an experienced, responsible, creative, and enthusiastic individual who embraces and thrives in an active, fast-paced, culturally diverse environment.
This is a leadership position in the Athens-Clarke County Library Teen Services Department. The Lead Assistant will help to plan and provide appealing, meaningful programming for teen-aged patrons. The position also helps oversee daily departmental tasks, and provides front-line services to patrons of all ages. This position requires dependability and the ability to start, finish or pick up work projects at various points, without direct supervision, is vital. This position reports to the Teen Services Coordinator.
Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required, with college degree or college experience preferred. Applicants should have at least one year of experience working with teens, and one year of experience planning and presenting youth programs. A combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered.
Supervisory & Management Responsibility
This position leads the Teen Department when the Teen Services Coordinator is unavailable. The Lead Assistant will independently manage the department during assigned shifts, including some evening and weekend hours, and will take a leadership role in program planning. This position will provide guidance and direction to the Teen Services staff and volunteers, and will monitor and directly address the activities and behavior of teens and other library patrons. The Lead Assistant is responsible for upholding all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitoring and responding to safety and security of library patrons; and reporting situations according to outlined procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments and schedules may change in the future.
- Helps the Teen Services Coordinator organize the teen programming schedule, and works with department staff to create and present age-appropriate programs and activities.
- Assists Coordinator with outreach efforts in the community, presenting programs and/or representing the department at schools, community events, or in community organizations.
- Cultivates a welcoming and safe environment in the Teen Department; develops a positive relationship with teens who visit the library and encourages them to return.
- Contributes content for the department’s social media outlets and web page.
- Designs and distributes promotional materials for teen programs and services.
- Provides leadership for daily library operations, including basic department maintenance; organizing and re-shelving materials and program supplies; and creating book and informational displays.
- Provides direct customer service to library patrons of all ages, especially teens, assisting with their information and readers’ advisory needs.
- Assists library patrons with computer activities, including catalog/Internet searching, printing, faxing, and copying.

- Ability to work with people with tact, patience, and courtesy, ability to effectively address behavior issues as they arise.
