We seek a Regional Teen Services Coordinator for the Athens Regional Library System. The System will hire an experienced, responsible, creative, and enthusiastic individual who embraces and thrives in an active, fast-paced, culturally diverse environment. A successful candidate is competent in the daily operations, programs, activities, and outreach of the Athens-Clarke County Library (A-CCL) Teen Area and staff. This candidate will also provide leadership and direction for Teen Services region-wide. This position will have a unique opportunity to help shape the development and growth of the library, working collaboratively with a professional team of managers to move the organization creatively forward in providing 21st-century library services. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Public Services.
Minimum Training and Experience
At least three years’ experience working with teenagers and the public is required and of direct supervisory experience; a Masters’ degree in librarianship is strongly preferred. Or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned and job description and work schedule may change in the future.
- Directs the Teen Services staff at A-CCL by establishing goals and priorities, managing program development and implementation, promoting programs and services, and creating and overseeing program budgets.
- Collaborates with schools and community groups that serve youth to promote the library, reading, and teen library events.
- Coordinates, creates, and presents age-appropriate programs for teens and young adults.
- Leads and collaborates with teen specialists across the Region to devise, provide, and promote teen services, collections, and programs.
- Provides direct customer service to library patrons of all ages, with an emphasis on teens and young adults.
- Provides knowledgeable and appropriate readers’ advisory and information support, with specific emphasis on materials for teens.
- Contributes to the selection, development, and maintenance of the young adult materials collection.
- Facilitates the work and activities of teen volunteers and teen advisory board.
- Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
- Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises and prioritizes work of A-CCL Teen Area staff to ensure ongoing service and compliance with policies and procedures; plans and maintains staff schedules and submits timesheets.
- Oversees assigned staff, including supervising, training, performance appraisal, recognition, and professional development; makes hiring and disciplinary recommendations.
Management Responsibilities
- Independently manages and operates the Teen Area, following established opening and closing procedures.
- Monitors and responds to the safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.
- Upholds and enforces all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement for all patrons and as it relates to the behavior of teen patrons at the library.
- Serves on library-related committees and ARLS teams.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience working with youth ages 12-17
- Ability to work collaboratively with other department heads and on a management team.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills applied to interaction with the public (especially teens), co-workers, and supervisor.
- Knowledge of the developmental needs of young adults and how they relate to providing age-appropriate resources and services.
- Ability to lead an effective work team to promote a positive attitude in staff.
- Skill in public speaking and program presentation techniques appropriate to the targeted audiences.
- Ability to confidently and effectively address behavior issues as they arise.
- Skill in upholding the library’s core values; ability to provide external and internal service that is welcoming, committed to excellence, inclusive, respectful, and that supports the community and co-workers.
- Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS policies, procedures, and activities.
- Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing efficient, positive, and professional customer service to patrons of all ages, and especially to teens.
- Ability to handle a busy public service desk and to remain calm under demanding, stressful conditions.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established practices and procedures.
- Specialized knowledge of literature for teens in traditional and emerging formats.
- Ability to keep up-to-date with popular culture and technological advances that interest teenagers.
- Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
- Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
- Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of Light Work.
