The Shelter Medicine Supervisor works closely with the Shelter Medicine Manager to support the seamless transition of animals from intake to adoption, ensure the humane care and enrichment of animals housed in the Shelter Medicine department and provide quality customer service in accordance with AHS mission, goals, and philosophy.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure accurate and up to date animal medical records are maintained in PetPoint database
- Assist Shelter Medicine Manager with the implementation of medical and behavior treatment of animals
- Assist Shelter Medicine Manager in pathway decision making and maintaining a daily surgery schedule
- Ensure animal kennels are cleaned and sanitized according to AHS protocol to minimize the risk of disease spread
- Maintain cleaning equipment to ensure proper functioning and safety for use
- Report any damaged equipment or facility repairs
- Coordinates staff training for Shelter Medicine team in conjunction with Shelter Medicine Manager
- Maintain item inventory through Intacct software
- Ensure staff compliance with operational and personnel policies
- Maintain staff schedules in collaboration with Shelter Medicine Manager
- Support staff in completion of daily tasks
- Promote the use of Fear Free animal handling
- Provide feedback to the Shelter Medicine Manager for employees’ annual evaluations in accordance with AHS policies
- Perform building opening and closing procedures on an as needed basis
- Provide quality customer service to patrons who visit or call AHS
- Assist and perform all components of animal euthanasia, as needed, in a humane manner in accordance with all AHS guidelines
- Responsible for proper humane handling and disposal of euthanized animals as needed
- Maintain all necessary documentation of drug usage
- Work closely with department staff and volunteers to accomplish AHS goals
- Handle agency funds in accordance with established verbal and written agency guidelines
- Adhere to safety procedures at all times
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Minimum of two years’ animal handling experience
- Currently hold euthanasia certification or obtain certification within 6 months of hire
- Minimum of one year experience in a supervisory capacity or veterinary setting; supervisory experience in an animal shelter preferred
- Proven ability to exercise independent judgement
- Ability to communicate efficiently orally and in writing
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of animal diseases, medications and treatment protocols
- Basic computer knowledge in a Windows environment

- Works in a high noise level area
- Requires humane handling of animals and the safe handling of cleaning supplies, chemicals and equipment in compliance with safety rules and in accordance with SDS rules
