What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterans Law Project Staff Attorney position at Atlanta Legal Aid Society?
Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Managing Attorney for its Veterans Law Project in Legal Aid’s downtown Atlanta office . Founded in 2022, the Veterans Law Project is an exciting opportunity to have an immediate and profound impact on the civil legal needs of veterans in the metro-Atlanta area. Last year, the Project obtained nearly $2 million in financial benefits for veterans and handled over 1100 cases. The project assists low-income and homeless veterans who have legal needs that create barriers to housing and economic stability. The project advocates on behalf of veterans to obtain live-sustaining income, health and housing benefits, restrict criminal and consumer records, upgrade military discharges, and prevent homelessness. Project staff support veterans through holistic legal services, as well as collaborations for supportive services with local law schools and courts, the VA hospital, and veteran services organizations. Currently, the project consists of an interim managing attorney, three staff attorneys, two paralegals and one part-time intake paralegal.
Responsibilities :
- Overall management, quality and efficacy of the Project team, including hiring, training, supervision, mentoring, and evaluating staff
- Overseeing case assignment and the legal work
- Working closely with Legal Aid’s management team
- Reviewing timekeeping and inspecting closed files to ensure grant compliance
- Developing, communicating, and maintaining relationships with the local bar and bench, government, community partners and funders; and attending trainings with and providing training to community partners and funders
- Developing and supervising pro bono clinics and clinics at VA facilities
- Leading the project’s strategic planning efforts
- Serving as a Legal Aid designee for major funders, conducting funder site visits, and supervising the preparation of quarterly and annual grant reports
- Reviewing and responding to client grievances
- Handling a small caseload, performing client intakes, and participating in community education and outreach.
