Title: Lifeguard Instructor
Department: Aquatics
FLSA Classification: Nonexempt, Part-Time
Reports to: Aquatics Director
Summary/objective
Responsible for teaching individuals to become certified lifeguards and ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary skills to keep people safe around water.

Teach Lifeguard Certification Courses:
- Instruct participants in lifeguard training programs, including courses on water safety, first aid, CPR, and emergency response techniques.
- Train individuals in proper rescue techniques, use of lifeguard equipment (e.g., rescue tubes, backboards), and handling emergency situations.
- Deliver course material in alignment with standards set by the organization
Assess Skills and Performance:
- Evaluate the skills of trainees through written exams, practical tests, and simulated rescue scenarios.
- Provide constructive feedback to improve performance and ensure all participants meet the required standards for certification.
Maintain Course Materials and Equipment:
- Ensure that all training materials and equipment are available and in good condition for each class.
- Keep up to date with changes to certification requirements and lifeguard safety procedures.
Ensure Safety Standards:
- Promote water safety and ensure all practices are consistent with organizational policies and safety guidelines.
- Ensure that lifeguard candidates understand the importance of their responsibilities in preventing accidents and responding to emergencies.
- Ensure all completion requirements for course are met
Manage Course Logistics:
- Submit appropriate paperwork to Red Cross at the end of the course and ensure those participants who pass receive their certification card.
Provide Support and Guidance:
- Mentor trainee lifeguards and provide ongoing support to new or experienced lifeguards in the field.
- Act as a role model for best practices and professional conduct.
Follow Regulatory Guidelines:
- Stay current with industry regulations and guidelines, such as those set by the American Red Cross, or other relevant governing bodies.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and emergency protocols during all training sessions.

Job Requirements
Physical demands
- Must maintain a high level of physical fitness to demonstrate lifeguard skills and respond effectively in emergencies.
- Must be able to swim in both deep and shallow water
- Must be able to work in an often warm and humid environment with heightened noise
- Must be able to work in both warm water and cool water pools
- Ability to work varied shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Must be able to teach a minimum of 2 classes ( Full Certification or Recertification) per season
Required competencies, education, and experience
- High School diploma preferred
- Prior aquatics teaching or coaching experience and current lifeguard certification preferred
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer Certification
- Superior customer service skills; ability to work with both teens and adults
- Ability to be creative in finding the best teaching methods to accommodate different populations
