The N7 Initiative seeks a highly experienced and motivated leader to serve as Director of the N7 Research Institute. In this critical role, you will shape the institute’s research agenda, recruit and manage authors, and oversee the editorial process to produce high-quality, policy-relevant publications. You will also lead the design and execution of research trips to enhance field-based insights and strengthen the institute’s network of scholars and policymakers. Additionally, you will oversee daily operations, manage a high-performing team, and drive fundraising efforts to ensure the sustainability of the institute’s work. As a key representative of the N7 Initiative, you will engage with government officials, international organizations, donors, and the media to advance the institute’s impact and visibility.
This position is based in our Washington, DC, headquarters, requiring 4 days per week in the office. The Atlantic Council offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers from $165,000 to $180,000. Job responsibilities
The Director will be specifically responsible for:
- Intellectual Leadership. Lead the development of the N7 Research Institute (NRI), shaping its intellectual framework and advancing its research work in alignment with the Atlantic Council’s mission and regional programming. Spearhead NRI’s written output, acting as a lead editor for publications and ensuring high-quality, policy-relevant research. Represent the institute through speaking engagements, conferences, and other platforms, maintaining a respected profile in the policy and academic communities.
- Research Network Development. Build and oversee a dynamic network of international and regional scholars, policymakers, and experts to contribute to NRI’s research agenda. Recruit and engage authors, fostering collaboration on publications and analysis that advance the N7 Initiative’s objectives. Organize and design research trips to enhance field-based insights and expand partnerships with institutions in the US and across the region.
- Management. Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing team, including assistant directors, researchers, and interns, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration. Oversee resident and non-resident Senior Fellows, managing their contributions and ensuring alignment with the institute’s goals. Maintain strong relationships with Board members, the Council’s networks, and key stakeholders to enhance the institute’s influence and effectiveness.
- Development. Work closely with Council leadership and the Office of External Relations to sustain and expand the institute’s funding base. Secure financial support from a diverse range of sources, including corporations, government agencies, international organizations, foundations, and individuals, ensuring the long-term sustainability of research activities.
- Outreach/Communications. Serve as the primary external representative of the N7 Initiative’s research institute, engaging with government officials, legislators, diplomatic representatives, donors, media, and academic institutions. Promote the institute’s work through public and private events, international conferences, and strategic media engagement, enhancing its visibility and impact.
Qualifications
- The candidate should have extensive background in Middle East studies, political science, international relations, or a related field.
- Ten or more years of experience in a related US government, non-governmental organizations think tanks positions relevant to regional integration.
- Proven track record of success in managing and leading policy and research teams.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Knowledge of the regional political landscape, especially as it relates to regional integration.
- Excellent research writing skills in English in both long (e.g., report-length) and short (e.g., newspaper article) formats.
- Able to work independently on project outputs.
- Professional experience interacting with civil society groups and government officials.
- Must have strong project management and personnel administration skills, and experience managing multiple complex projects.
