The Atlantic Council Global Energy Center (GEC) seeks a motivated, talented, and creative communications professional who is eager to help our work products reach a broader audience and creatively engage a diverse network of stakeholders from the energy industry and policymaking community.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Strategy and Operations, the Assistant Director will lead our communications efforts including social media, graphics and video production, event and publications support, email marketing, and maintenance of the GEC’s webpages on the Atlantic Council website as well as support the development of new work products. The broader team will look to this individual to conceptualize and implement the communications strategy and advance community engagement within an entrepreneurial atmosphere. The ideal candidate will have experience with graphic and / or video design, website maintenance, email marketing, working with journalists, and an interest in energy and climate policy. This position requires cross-collaboration with colleagues in other regional and thematic centers across the Atlantic Council, in particular the position will involve close coordination with the broader Atlantic Council communications and digital teams.

The successful candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit, superb communication skills, and enjoy the complexity of helping to expand a rapidly growing program. The candidate should have a background in communications, public relations, graphic design, or a related field. Special consideration will be given to candidates with demonstrable interest and / or experience in energy and environmental industries, political science, international relations, and geopolitics. The candidate should also have a proven aptitude to take initiative, make sound judgments, assume responsibility and work independently in a fast-paced Center with tight deadlines and competing priorities.

This position is based in our Washington, DC, headquarters, requiring a minimum of 4 days per week in office. The Atlantic Council offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers from $60,000 to $63,000. Applications submitted by January 31, 2025, will be prioritized for consideration.

Job Responsibilities

Digital, social media, and email marketing :

  • Manage GEC X and LinkedIn social media accounts (including select staff accounts).
  • Create graphics and video content as needed for digital and print media use.
  • Manage and compile the GEC’s biweekly email newsletter.
  • Coordinate event invitation process and grow event attendance.
  • Manage the various GEC email lists and work to grow our online reach.

Data Analytics :

  • Track data and metrics across all communications channels and develop best practices based on data analytics.
  • Website :

  • Ensure GEC presence on the AC website is regularly updated and conforms to AC style, including staff and nonresident fellow bios and media mentions, center and initiative pages, and publication and event pages.
  • Publications :

  • Support Managing Editor in the positioning and marketing of GEC publications.
  • Develop supporting material for publications, including infographics, videos, graphics, and charts.
  • Assist with the publication of blogs on EnergySource, including identifying photos and writing blog summaries.
  • Events :

  • Support general GEC event execution, including flagship events, through coordination with Atlantic Council Engagement Team.
  • Lead photography, recaps, registration, and promotion of high-level public and private events.
  • Coordinate with Atlantic Council A / V team to stream public events on GEC and Atlantic Council platforms.
  • Community Engagement :

  • Ensure the GEC is reaching its top stakeholders through active engagement with key parties and development of bespoke communications products and outreach.
  • Support the GEC’s fundraising efforts by designing creative decks and other digital materials as requested.
  • Qualifications

  • 2 years of relevant work experience in communications and / or media relations, preferably with a focus in the energy or policy industry;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or related field;
  • Excellent English language copyediting, and written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong social media proficiency, particularly within the professional context;
  • Experience with WordPress and Adobe Creative Cloud (including Marketo Engage) software highly desired;
  • Graphic design, data visualization, and video production and editing highly desired;
  • Press background highly desired;
  • Experience with Flourish, muck rack, Switchboard, Google Analytics, and / or Snapstream preferred;
  • Experience with copyediting, preferably following Chicago Manual of Style preferred;
  • Understanding of Washington policy environment;
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, with high attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work well with a team in a dynamic environment and ability to work independently and proactively;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work well with senior officials, scholars, journalists, staff, and interns.
