Senior Tax Accountant Job Description – Private Equity
Position Summary:
A Senior Tax Accountant at a private equity firm is responsible for managing complex tax matters, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, and optimizing the firm’s tax strategies. The role demands in-depth knowledge of private equity fund structures, partnerships, and tax laws. This position involves working closely with internal teams, external advisors, and regulatory agencies.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Compliance:
- Prepare and review federal, state, and local tax returns for the firm and its investment entities, including partnerships and LLCs.
- Ensure compliance with tax laws, regulations, and filing deadlines.
- Collaborate with external tax advisors on annual tax filings.
Tax Planning & Strategy:
- Develop and implement tax-efficient strategies for fund investments and firm operations.
- Provide guidance on the tax implications of acquisitions, divestitures, and restructuring activities.
- Monitor and apply changes in tax legislation affecting the private equity industry.
Reporting:
- Prepare quarterly and annual tax provisions and disclosures in accordance with GAAP or IFRS standards.
- Support the preparation of investor tax reporting, including Schedule K-1s and other required documents.
- Work with the accounting team to ensure accurate tax reporting and financial statement presentation.
Risk Management:
- Identify and mitigate potential tax risks.
- Conduct internal audits of tax processes and controls.
- Address inquiries and audits from tax authorities.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Partner with the finance, legal, and deal teams to assess tax implications of transactions.
- Act as a subject matter expert on tax matters for internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide training and updates on tax developments to the internal team.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA, JD, or advanced degree in Taxation preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of tax experience, with a strong focus on partnerships, funds, or private equity.
- Experience with private equity or investment management tax issues.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in tax software and financial systems (e.g., OneSource, GoSystem, or similar).
- Strong understanding of partnership taxation, carried interest, and foreign tax compliance.
