Key Responsibilities:
- Install underground fiber optic cables by digging trenches, pulling cables, and placing conduits, manholes, and handholes.
- Support aerial cable installation by securing cables on poles or towers, using ladders or bucket trucks.
- Perform manual labor tasks, including shoveling, lifting heavy materials, and preparing installation sites.
- Operate heavy equipment, such as backhoes, trenchers, directional drills, and cable plows, to excavate trenches and install underground fiber optic cables.
- Safely maneuver bucket trucks or other equipment for aerial installations and maintenance.
- Prepare sites by clearing debris, setting up traffic control, and marking utility locations, coordinating with utility companies as needed.
- Adhere to safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe equipment operation, and compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Follow safe digging practices to avoid damage to existing utilities.
- Clean and maintain hand tools, power tools, and fiber optic equipment to ensure operational readiness.
- Report equipment malfunctions or repair needs to the supervisor.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in construction, telecommunications, or equipment operation preferred.
- 1-2 years of experience as a laborer or equipment operator in construction, telecommunications, or utility installation.
- Ability to read and follow basic site plans, work orders, and safety guidelines.
- Valid Driver’s License with a Clean Driving Record
- Physical ability to lift heavy materials (up to 50 lbs.), dig trenches, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or at heights.
- Strong work ethic, attention to safety, and ability to work in a team.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions, travel, or be on-call for emergency repairs.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with underground utility locating and safe digging practices.
- Basic understanding of telecommunications or fiber optic infrastructure.
- Certifications in equipment operation (e.g., OSHA 10, NCCCO) or fiber optics (e.g., FOA CFOT).
- Experience operating heavy equipment, such as backhoes, trenchers, directional drills, or bucket trucks.
- Basic knowledge of fiber optic cable installation or willingness to learn splicing and testing techniques.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred for heavy equipment operation.
Work Environment:
- Primarily outdoor work in various weather conditions, with occasional indoor tasks in equipment rooms.
- Involves physical labor, operating heavy equipment, and working at heights, in trenches, or in remote locations.
- May require on-call availability for emergency repairs or network outages.
