Atlas Obscura’s editorial team — aided by our passionate community of contributors and members — is committed to building the definitive guide to the wonders of the world, fostering curiosity, and providing readers with trustworthy, on-the-ground reporting, storytelling, and experiences that enable exploration.

We’re looking for an editorial fellow to help expand and refine our database of the world’s most extraordinary places and create themed lists and story collections that highlight the very best of our archive.

This entry-level position is paid, offers benefits, and lasts one year. Our fellowships are full-time jobs, but they also offer training and learning opportunities to writers who have not yet established themselves in the field. For these roles, we give priority to newer writers. Candidates with more than three years of full-time, professional experience in journalism are unlikely to be considered. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Atlas Obscura is a remote-first company, so you can live and work from anywhere in the continental United States or Canada. Responsibilities

• Support Atlas Curation: Edit and enhance user-generated place entries, ensuring they meet our standards for accuracy, clarity, and storytelling.
• Create Thematic Content: Develop themed place lists and themed article collections, showcasing the breadth of Atlas Obscura’s storytelling and improving content discoverability.
• Support Editorial Initiatives: Provide research and editorial assistance across departments, as needed.

Qualifications

• You have some experience or education in writing or journalism, with excellent writing and research skills.
• You have a deep curiosity about places — hidden gems, historic sites, cultural landmarks, and natural wonders — and you’re fascinated by the stories behind them.
• You have the ability to generate fresh ideas, exercise sound editorial judgment, and see connections between stories.

Compensation

This position pays $45,000.
