Title: Summer Internship - Phoenix National Labs
Schedule: Part Time/Full Time

Phoenix National Laboratories assists commercial and industrial clients by providing asset evaluations, special inspections, nondestructive testing, welder qualification, mechanical testing, and metallurgical and materials services. Our capabilities include bearing pad testing; tank integrity evaluations; piping, pressure vessel, and structure evaluations; special testing; ASTM and AASHTO testing; and failure analysis, among others. We cater our services to each client’s unique consulting engineering, inspection, and testing needs. Our experienced engineers and technicians provide assistance to the construction, pipeline, power generation, mining, manufacturing, fabrication, semiconductor, medical devices, petrochemical, transportation, heavy machinery, and municipalities industries. As part of the ATS family of companies, we can offer additional calibration capabilities when clients need a broader scope of services
Internship Overview:
As an intern at PNL, you will have the opportunity to work directly in our testing lab, assisting with the testing procedures for our growing office in Tempe, AZ. The internship is going to include a lot of direct hands-on Lab Testing in the nondestructive testing, mechanical testing and material inspection space and work to utilize your knowledge and gain great experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with and under the supervision of an engineer and engineering technicians to prepare, and test polymer and metallic materials to ASTM, State, and Federal standards.
- Read and understand ASTM standards, AASHTO test standards, and internal procedures in order to perform tests.
- Use typical industry equipment including calipers, dial indicators, hand tools, electromechanical and hydraulic test machines and software to perform specified tests and create test reports of results.
- Typical material tests include tensile and yield strength analysis, hardness in various scales, compression strength, flexural modulus, shear modulus, bond strength, and visual examinations.
- Opportunity to learn and apply the various lab testing procedures and support a laboratory improvement initiative in coordination with supervising engineer.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Must be a Full-Time Student, ideally in an Engineering Bachelor’s program
- Strong interest in the Materials Testing and Inspection industry
- Strong attention to detail and safety procedures
