JOB SUMMARY

This is a brief synopsis of overall job duties.

Responsible for the administration of all medications and treatments to provide the highest possible quality of nursing care for each residents, adhering to established standards and recommendations for the long term care of the geriatric residents.

Supervised by: Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing and Administrator

Supervises: Nurse aides and Certified Medication Aides on the same shift

Qualifications


Qualifications:

  • Must be a Licensed Practical Nurse in good standing and meet all applicable federal and state licensure requirements.
  • Must be able to supervise and instruct others.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English effectively.
  • Must be knowledgeable of general, rehabilitative and restorative nursing and medical practices and procedures and laws, regulations and guidelines governing long-term care.
  • Background clearance mandatory (TB, Drug Screening, Physical…)
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
  • Must be positive team player and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Positive attitude toward the elderly

Education- Certificates, Licenses or Registrations:

  • Must have a current Kansas licensures for practical nurse required.

Experience:

  • Current Kansas licensures for practical nurse
  • Must be knowledgeable of general nursing theory and practice
  • Thorough knowledge of isolation procedures and prevention of spread of disease

  • Ability to maintain quality resident care, including compliance with physician’s orders and facility policies.

Licensed Practical Nurse Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: (Other duties may be assigned.)

Essential Job Function Duties:

  • Direct the day-today functions of nursing assistants
  • Complete and maintain medical forms, reports, and charts.
  • Periodically meet with assigned nursing staff in planning shifts, services, programs and activities
  • Admit, transfer and discharge residents as required
  • Ensure that all nursing personnel are performing their respective duties in accordance with written policies, procedures and manuals
  • Participate in surveys and inspections by government agencies
  • Interpret the department’s policies and procedures to personnel, residents, families, visitors and government agencies as necessary
  • Make reports to the Director of Nursing for any violations of Abuse, Neglect or Exploitation.

Nursing Care Function Duties:

  • Participate in the orientation of new residents and family members
  • Inform personnel of new admissions, ensure that rooms are ready, greet new admissions and escort to rooms
  • Maintain established nursing objectives and standards
  • Monitor residents’ treatment and medications and make independent decisions regarding nursing care to ensure residents are receiving proper care
  • Ensure cleanliness and safety of all nursing treatment areas
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary and ensure proper recordkeeping
  • Consult with physicians in providing care, treatment, diagnostic and therapeutic services, and notify physicians of resident accidents, incidents and changes in condition
  • Coordinate social and activity programs with nursing schedules
  • Meet with residents and families and report problem areas
  • Assist in arranging transportation for residents when needed.
  • Call family and physicians on any new changes with residents

Personnel Functions Duties:

  • Supervise and instruct nursing personnel, develop work assignments
  • Make daily rounds and ensure that all nursing personnel are performing duties in accordance with acceptable nursing standards
  • Ensure that personnel, residents and visitors follow established policies and procedures at all times
  • Provide supervision and leadership to other nursing personnel assigned to the shift and unit.

Residents’ Rights Functions Duties:

  • Maintain resident confidentiality and privacy
  • Treat residents with kindness, dignity and respect
  • Know and comply with and ensure that all nursing personnel know and comply with Residents’ Rights rules.
  • Monitor nursing to ensure that residents’ rights and need s are met
  • Promptly report to the Director of Nursing and the Administrator and maintain written records of all resident complaints and grievances.

Staff Development Functions Duties:

  • Attend and participate in orientation, training, educational activities and staff meetings.
  • Maintain professional competence, as well as current licenses, through participation in continuing education programs, seminars and training programs

Physical and Sensory Requirements

  1. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.
  2. Must be able to speak, read and write the English language in an understandable manner to ensure proper documentation is accurately completed.
  3. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position and calmly communicate with the residents during the stressful times.
  4. Must possess touching, sight, taste and hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met, such as the ability to distinguish smells, taste, temps and hear and respond to paging systems.
  5. Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with the residents, personnel and support agencies.
  6. Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility which include a medical and physical examination.
  7.  Must be able to relate to, communicate and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times, hostile people within the facility.
  8. Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 50 pounds to a minimum height of waist level and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight.
  9. May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
  10. Standing, walking, bending and lifting will occur throughout entire shift.
  11. Must be able to reach, grasp and have fine hand coordination.
  12. Must be able to utilize gait belts, sit to stand, and hoyer lifts to transfer residents.
  13. Ability to understand and apply training

Contribute to facility efforts to maintain and/or improve quality of care through participation in the following:

  1. Participate in learning circles
  2. Attend mandatory in-services.

Other tasks not listed here may be assigned by the Administrator, DON, and ADON.  Periodic revision may be necessary to reflect changes in expectations placed on long term care by the KDADs. This job description will be reviewed and/or revised by the DON annually and as needed.
