SCHOOL NURSE - 187 CONTRACT DAYS
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registered Nurse.
- Must hold valid Alabama Nursing License as a Registered Nurse.
- Maintain a current CPR certification.
- Must hold valid Alabama Driving License.
- Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to provide wise and prudent nursing judgment, crisis intervention as needed and/or treatment and support as necessary for the student to attend school. Ability to keep clinical practice current in order to provide high quality care, train others and evaluate outcomes of care. Able to train and monitor Medication Assistants and Licensed Practical Nurses. Ability to write and implement health care plans and emergency plans for students with long-term chronic health needs. Ability to follow medical orders and build professional relationships with appropriate providers. Ability to assess immunizations records and provide health screenings. Ability to communicate with school personnel, families, students and community resource personnel in health care and/or related fields. Skills in oral and written communication. Ability to operate a computer and utilize software applications related to assignment.

JOB GOAL
To meet the healthcare needs and maintain medical records of students in Auburn City Schools.
SUPERVISES: Unlicensed Medication School Personnel and License Practical Nurses
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- (1) Attend and help to present “Curriculum To Teach Unlicensed School Personnel – How to Assist with Medications in a School Setting.
- (2) Monitor the dispensing medications at the assigned schools and maintain accurate records and documentation including;
Privacy records of dispensing medications
Training of student/staff on specific needs of students
Verifying completeness of all Prescriber/Parent Authorization Forms
An emergency plan that could result from assisting students with medications
Ensuring all unusual occurrence reports are properly submitted and filed according to Auburn City Schools’ policy.
- (3) Assist with Vision Screenings.
- (4) Facilitate Scoliosis Screenings including communication with parents and completing all documentation and required state reports.
- (5) Maintain current immunization records on all students at assigned schools.
- (6) Meet daily medical needs of students.
- (7) Maintain current records of all health concerns and visits to the school office or nurse’s station for health needs.
- (8) Write current Individualized Health Care Plans for students with chronic illnesses including;
Collaborate with License Practical Nurse to ensure all care plans are implemented
Developing a plan for emergencies, possible side effects, signs and symptoms
- (9) Assist Counselors with 5th Grade Human Growth and Development classes.
- (10) Assist with head lice checks as needed and communicate with parents about treatment, prevention and Auburn City Schools policy.
- (11) Present In-Service Training as requested.
- (12) Attend Auburn City Schools’ Nurse Meetings.
- (13) Keep license current.
- (14) Engage in continuing improvement of professional knowledge and skills.
- (15) Act in a professional and ethical manner and adhere to professional standards at all times.
- (16) Demonstrate attention to punctuality, records and reports.
- (17) Comply with policies, procedures and programs of the Auburn City School System.
- (18) Exercise appropriate professional judgment.
- (19) Demonstrate support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
- (20) Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
- (21) Keep supervisor and/or principal informed of potential problems or unusual events.
- (22) Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system’s approved compensation plan.
Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
