Reports to:High School Principal and Superintendent
Responsibilities:
Creates an environment where every student, athlete, coach, official, and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility, and sportsmanship, as well as dedication to academic achievement.
Works cooperatively and collaboratively with the Town’s Parks Department and/or the Recreation Commission and/or the Pappas Commission in planning, organizing, coordinating, and scheduling all Auburn Public Schools' athletic facilities and school fields.
Essential Functions:
organizes, administers, and evaluates the overall program of the Auburn Public Schools extra-curricular athletics, both intramural and interscholastic; fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the District's extracurricular activities, both intramural and interscholastic
provides leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and program staff
assumes responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic events
develops, maintains, and periodically revises the Coaches' Handbook and provides an annual coaches' workshop to review the critical elements of the handbook
develops and places into operation appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities
arranges transportation for athletic contest participants
hires officials, team physicians, and police as required, and assumes general responsibility for the proper supervision of home games
verifies each athlete's eligibility according to established physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport
prepares and administers the athletic, physical education and health program budgets
requisitions athletic program supplies and equipment
supervises all ticket sales and fundraising events of the athletic program, and assumes responsibility for proper handling, reporting, and accounting of funds
arranges the details of visiting teams' needs, as required
administers the insurance program covering school athletes, and assumes responsibility for all processing of reports and claims
recommends, helps coordinate and arranges proper supervision of the use of the high school athletic facility and fields when used by the school or community groups, including recommending custodial and site manager coverage
reviews, monitors and audits the publications and materials prepared for distribution concerning athletic and activity program information
provides direction and oversight for tournament participation, summer sports camp, transportation, assignment of officials, athletic clearance, and final team roster
assists in the coordination of CPR, First Aid and AED trainings for pertinent staff members and coaches throughout the District
coordinates compliance with concussion policy
oversees compliance of all existing and future physical education, health and athletic regulations, as required
schedules and coordinates all Letter Nights and Meet the Coaches Night, securing appropriate guest speakers, as needed
schedules, organizes, and motivates teams to complete their required community service projects
oversees the repair and maintenance of all athletic equipment
interprets league policy to coaches and staff
coordinates the cancellation, postponement and rescheduling of athletic events
maintains positive public relations with press
creates and plans new programs with input from various stakeholders
promotes positive sportsmanship in the community
provides high school administrative support as assigned by the building principal, to include parking lot oversight
other duties, including attendance at athletic events, as assigned by the Superintendent or AHS Principal
Ability to:
provide specialized resource support and coordination of a creative and innovative sports program
analyze and assess interscholastic sports program needs, and offer recommendations pertaining to program activity revisions, additions, or deletions
communicate effectively orally and in writing
establish and maintain effective organization, community, and public relationships
work collaboratively with others
Knowledge of:
methods, techniques, procedures, and strategies concerning the development and maintenance of an effective sports program
policies, regulations, and procedures pertaining to sports and special programs
sports interest groups and organizations within the local communities, modern trends pertaining to interscholastic sports and physical education instruction processes and activities
principles, goals, and objectives of public education
Qualifications:
evidence of ability to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required
professional endorsement of exemplary leadership behaviors and verification of the demonstrated ability to serve as a positive role model for students and staff
professional verification of leadership experience in public school education, including at least three years of successful experience as a coach, athletic director, teacher or public school administrator
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university in educational administration or a related field
a valid Massachusetts Department of Education Administrators License(preferred)
Terms of Employment:
contract conditions: length of contract, renewal of contract, salary and benefits are established by the School Committee according to School Committee policy and procedures
Evaluation:
performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Auburn Public School’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel
