Sewer Operator
The Auburn Sewer District is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Sewer Operator. This role involves the operation and maintenance of the District’s water distribution and sewer collection systems.
Responsibilities:
- Install, operate, repair, and maintain all sewer collection system infrastructure, including mains/pipes, gates/valves, pumps, hydrants, and services.
- Regularly inspect pumps and other infrastructure to ensure proper functioning.
- Maintain and construct barricades, raise manholes, and assist with traffic control.
- Flush sewer mains and assist with thawing frozen services.
- Cut and remove trees to facilitate system installation and functioning.
- Perform water taps to create openings in pipes.
- Operate, maintain, and repair or assist with the repair of light and heavy motorized equipment, such as backhoes, dump trucks, bulldozers, loaders, and excavators.
- Shovel or plow snow from hydrants and pump stations during winter.
- Follow all applicable AWSD safety procedures and OSHA safety regulations. Attend all safety meetings and training sessions.
- Assist with the general maintenance of AWSD facilities as required.
- Perform on-call duties to respond to and resolve sewer blockages or other emergencies.
- Temporarily act as lead for a small crew in the absence of the Sewer Foreman/Lead Operator.
- Assist with the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of water distribution system infrastructure.
- Participate in watershed patrol and general watershed maintenance, including installing and removing buoys.
- Undertake special projects and other related duties as required.
- Maintain regular attendance at the workplace.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in the installation and repair of sewer collection system infrastructure.
- Ability to learn the operation and maintenance practices of a sewer collection system.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform simple mechanical maintenance.
- Physical strength, agility, and endurance to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions. Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 80 pounds.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and ordinances, and the rules involved in operating automotive vehicles.
- Familiarity with the geography of the City, including the location of streets.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with safety practices and procedures.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with limited supervision or as part of a crew.
- Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions independently and follow more detailed instructions with limited guidance.
- Effective communication skills, ability to maintain work relationships, and courteous interaction with the public.
- Availability to respond to after-hours emergency calls as required.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One to three years of experience in the installation and maintenance of sewer collection system infrastructure or similar work involving the operation of light and heavy motorized equipment.
- Must possess and maintain a Class II Sewer Collection System Operator’s License and a valid Class B CDL State of Maine driver’s license, or the ability to obtain these licenses within 12 months.
