Job Description Summary
The Department of Physics at Auburn University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Experimental Laboratory Astrophysics. Laboratory Astrophysics involves laboratory experiments and theoretical calculations aimed at understanding our universe by complementing astronomical observations and astrophysical/astrochemical modeling. Auburn University is seeking candidates with expertise in experimental approaches that enhance and expand current efforts in this vital field.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead a cutting-edge, externally funded research program in Experimental Laboratory Astrophysics, focusing on laboratory experiments that complement astronomical observations and space exploration.
  • Conduct experiments to contribute to our understanding of astrophysical processes, astrochemical reactions, and fundamental atomic and molecular physics in space environments.
  • Work across disciplines with colleagues from astrophysics, plasma physics, planetary science, heliophysics, and related fields to advance knowledge of the physical processes driving astrophysical phenomena.
  • Teach and mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, providing them with strong foundations in laboratory astrophysics and experimental methods.
  • Contribute to departmental service and broader university initiatives, promoting the visibility and impact of Auburn's research in laboratory astrophysics

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, astronomy, or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.
  • A record of significant research accomplishments in Laboratory Astrophysics, including experience with experimental techniques, laboratory simulations, or computational/theoretical modeling relevant to astrophysical environments.
  • Strong potential or demonstrated success in securing external funding to support research.
  • The ability to effectively teach and mentor students, particularly in areas related to laboratory astrophysics and experimental techniques.
  • A demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary research and collaboration, especially within the fields of physics, astrophysics, chemistry, and planetary science.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States at the time employment begins and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
  • Candidates must possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., astrophysicists, astrochemists, plasma physicists, planetary scientists, engineers).
  • Expertise that aligns with optimizing the science return of astrophysical research, either through laboratory experimentation, data interpretation, or instrument development.
  • A commitment to creating and sustaining a positive, safe, and professional research and training environment that fosters a sense of belonging.
