Job Summary
The Miller Writing Center (MWC) invites applications for peer consultants, the primary providers of support to student writing at Auburn University. Peer consultants assist clients with writing projects through one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions. Students offered the job will need to complete the hiring process with Human Resources by May 2, 2025, which will likely entail a face-to-face employment eligibility verification appointment where you must present original identity and employment authorization documents. Successful candidates will begin asynchronous online training on May 2025, and start to work at the writing center on August 2025, with the possibility of renewal in subsequent years.

The MWC seeks to employ a diverse team of students with different language backgrounds, life experiences, areas of expertise, knowledge, perspectives, and strengths. Candidates from any academic discipline are encouraged to apply as long as their interests and/or career goals align with the work of the Miller Writing Center and University Writing.
  • Employment eligibility verification: Students offered the job will need to complete the
    hiring process with Human Resources by May 2, 2025, which will likely entail a face-to-face employment eligibility verification appointment where you must present originalidentity and employment authorization documents.
  • Training requirement: New peer consultants are required to complete a practicum via Canvas requiring several hours per week over summer semester (May 19 to August 1, 2025). The lessons will be delivered asynchronously, so they can be fit into other summer work. All training is paid.
  • Time commitment: Students are expected to work between 10-20 hours/week (0.25-0.5 FTE) in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026. The MWC guarantees 10 hours of paid worktime per week during the semester (9 hours of shifts plus 1 hour of professional development); additional work hours may be available depending on staffing.
  • Compensation: Undergraduate peer consultants will receive an hourly wage of $15.00/hour with $0.25/hour increases in subsequent years. Graduate peer consultants will earn $17.00/hour. This position is not eligible for tuition remission or any other benefits.
Essential Functions
  • Work with students across disciplines on a range of writing and multimedia projects, providing guidance on the composing process, genre, audience, structure, design, citation, grammar, and other rhetorical elements
  • Help clients achieve their academic and professional communication goals with a focus on their long-term learning
  • Communicate clearly, quickly, and responsibly with clients, full-time staff members, front desk representatives, and other consultants
  • Promote the writing center through class presentations, information tables, and other events
  • Navigate the online data management platform (Advise Assist)
  • Complete client report forms following sessions
  • Maintain the confidentiality of client records
  • Work regular weekly shifts as assigned
  • Participate in required trainings, meetings, and professional development activities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled student (undergraduate or graduate) at Auburn University during the 2025-2026 academic year

  • Ability to think critically about academic writing
  • Availability for several hours of paid asynchronous training per week over summer term
  • Availability for 10-20 hours/week of work at the Miller Writing Center in fall and spring semesters
  • Good academic standing for all semesters employed
