Job Description: The Stage Manager (SM) is a vital link in any theatrical production, overseeing both the creative and technical aspects to ensure seamless execution. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of a stage manager’s responsibilities:
Pre-Production and Rehearsal Responsibilities
- Preparation
- Assemble and maintain a stage management kit with necessary tools and supplies.
- Spike the stage for sets
- Assist PT during load in as needed: lights, props, sets, paint, costumes, backstage.
- Communication
- Act as the central point of contact between the director, cast, crew, and production team.
- Rehearsal Management
- Arrive early to set up rehearsal spaces, including props, furniture, and marking blocking.
- Record blocking, cues, and any changes made during rehearsals.
- Ensure safety and professionalism during rehearsals.
- Problem Solving
- Address logistical issues and conflicts, ensuring rehearsals run smoothly.
Technical Rehearsals and Previews
- Coordination
- Work closely with the technical director, directors and crew to integrate technical elements into the performance.
- Safety Checks
- Conduct pre-show safety and equipment checks.
Performance Responsibilities
- Pre-Show
- Oversee pre-show setup, including props, set pieces, and actor readiness.
- Check in with crew and cast to confirm readiness.
- Calling the Show
- Manage timing and coordination of all cues during the performance.
- Ensure smooth transitions between scenes and technical elements.
- Problem Management
- Troubleshoot issues that arise during performances while keeping disruptions minimal.
Post-Show and Production Wrap-Up
- Strike and Cleanup
- Oversee the strike process, ensuring all items are properly dismantled, stored, or returned.
- Documentation
- Archive the prompt book, reports, and other materials for future reference.
- Cast and Crew Support
- Provide feedback, encouragement, and support to the team throughout the production process.
