Emergency Medical Technician- Part time On Call

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for treating all guests, employees, volunteers, and contractors that are in need of first aid or emergency medical attention on Audubon Nature Institute property. The position is full-time and may require the EMT to work weekdays, weekends, and some nights and holidays. The EMT is responsible for handling all first aid and emergency calls that are placed while on duty, proper documentation of those calls, restocking equipment, and inventory tracking. The EMT is expected to have a working knowledge of the Region One Protocol Effort (ROPE) and be able to treat all patients accordingly. The First Responder Department is a non-transporting, BLS, EMS Agency associated with the Louisiana Bureau of EMS and operates under the license of a Medical Director.

To deliver on the Audubon mission, the EMT will: 


Provide a guest experience of outstanding quality.

    Treat all patients needing medical attention.

    Document all patient contact.

    Treat all guest, employee, visitor, or contractor medical information as confidential.

    Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Audubon Nature Institute standards, as required by scheduling, which may vary according to the needs of the organization.  Submit availability to work each month by the 15th day of the previous month to the Emergency Medical Coordinator.



Weave quality entertainment through the guest experience.

    Remain informed by reading all memos and information concerning the First Responder Department at the beginning of each shift.

    Document patient interaction clearly, concisely, and without spelling errors.



Operate a financially self-sufficient collection of museums and parks.

    Have working knowledge of automatic external defibrillator, standard radio, pulse oximeter, blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, oxygen regulator, etc. 

    Check all equipment and replace supplies as needed at the beginning and end of each shift.

    Perform inventory checks on stocked equipment.

    Walk individual to destination instead of pointing; offer assistance to people who look confused.

    Keep unpleasant concerns behind closed doors (vent backstage).

Supervision: not applicable.

Experience:  

    Three years of experience working in EMS as an EMT or Paramedic.

    Willingness and ability to work weekends, holidays and special events as necessary.


Education:  High school diploma or equivalent

Licensure/Certification: 

1.    National Registry EMT Basic or Paramedic

2.    Louisiana Bureau of EMS Practitioner License

3.    AHA BLS Healthcare Provider

4.    Valid U.S. Driver’s License


Software Requirements:  proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)


Machinery/Tools/Equipment Requirements:  Must have the ability to use mobile devices, computer, fax, scanner, phone and copy machine. Ability to drive a golf cart.  Working knowledge of automatic external defibrillator, standard radio, pulse oximeter, blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, oxygen regulator.

Physical Requirements:

1.    Heavy Work:  exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  May involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

2.    Sitting or standing, bending, stooping, and the ability to carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

3.    Constant adequate range of motion and mobility required.

4.    Regular near acuity with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less required. 

5.    Typical ability to collect and analyze numerical and written data and verbal information to reach logical conclusions and ability to determine the time, place and sequence of operations or actions required.

6.    Regular talking and the ability to express and exchange ideas by means of language expected.

7.    Regular hearing and the ability to perceive the nature of sounds.

8.    Constant ability to read, record, or type data quickly and accurately required.

Environmental/Working Conditions:

1.    Working long hours between breaks or meals required.

2.    Ability to work under and handle stress in an appropriate manner required.

3.    May be exposed to high, medium, or low noise intensity.

4.    Constant contact with co-workers required.

5.    Affinity for animals preferred.

6.    Exposure to fluctuations in temperatures may be required.

7.    Exposure to outdoor conditions may be required.
