SUMMARY: Do you have a passion for wildlife and the outdoors? We provide a positive, fun working environment with plenty of opportunities to develop new leadership and teaching skills. Our Assistant Camp Director position will provide you with the tools and training to assist in leading a nature camp, provide effective youth leadership programming, and manage the safety and well-being of campers and staff. NH Audubon believes in an inquiry-based, student-led approach to our teaching methods which is aimed at promoting curiosity of the natural world.

The Assistant Camp Directors will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by planning and conducting weekly lessons and activities for Leader-in-Training campers on environmental education and team building, assisting with coordination of daily nature-based activities and weekly all-camp games, training and managing camp staff, managing camper and staff safety and well-being, and supervising campers during extended care programs.

TITLE: Assistant Camp Director

LOCATION: McLane Center (Concord, NH)

COMPENSATION:

· $17.50/hour payrate plus paid holidays (Juneteenth & Independence Day)

· Returning candidates will receive a “pay bump” of $0.25/hour for each year they return in this role up to $1/hour more than the advertised payrate

Minimum age required: 18

HOURS: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm, 1-hour unpaid lunch, seasonal full-time, non-exempt (hourly paid). Hours may vary depending on camp needs.

SCHEDULE: June 2nd - August 29th, 2025 (up to 13 weeks total: one week of onboarding, two weeks of all-staff training, nine weeks of active camp sessions, and one week of wrap-up duties).

Expected days off: weekends, Juneteenth (June 19th, 2025), Independence Day (July 4th, 2025), August 1st, 2025 (NOT a paid holiday, 3-day weekend following Session 6)

Possibility to work Winter Wonders Camp (February 24th-28th, 2025), Signs of Spring Camp (April 28th – May 2nd, 2025), and/or Camp Open House & Reunion events (dates TBD) depending on hiring date and availability.

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by assisting with the operation and program coordination of an established environmental day camp sponsored by New Hampshire Audubon.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Attend all training sessions prior to the camp season.

· Assist with and leads staff training.

· Organize and review camper forms and maintain camper records (e.g., incident reports, medication administration, daily attendance, etc.).

· Ensure these forms are properly completed by Camp Educators and signed by parents/guardians

· Manages camper check-in/check-out procedures.

· Coordination of ‘Leaders-in-Training’ program.

· Recommend purchases and maintain camp supplies and equipment.

· Oversee daily camp operations including staff supervision. Perform the role of Acting Camp Director when Camp Director is off-site.

· Develop, facilitate, and monitor camp activities.

· Assist instructors with lesson development.

· Act as liaison and maintain good relationships with campers’ parents.

· Coordinate all-camp programs and activities (e.g., Monday Morning Circle, Camper Contract, Friday afternoon all-camp games, etc.).

· Rearrange groups/schedule or lead camper groups during instructor absences.

· Ensure compliance with NH’s COVID safety guidelines for summer camps.

· Create and sustain a respectful camp culture with a zero tolerance for bullying.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

LEADERSHIP: Reports to Camp Administrator. When Camp Administrator is offsite, performs as Acting Camp Director and reports to Massabesic Center Director (Auburn), Director of Education (Concord), or the center’s Education Coordinator if needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Outdoor camp setting; Non-smoking environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in elementary education, environmental education, outdoor education, biology, natural history, or related field preferred.

Experience: Must have experience working in a camp setting and teaching children ages 5-15; demonstrated ability to develop creative environmental education activities. Proven leadership and supervisory experience required. Ability to make both independent and collaborative decisions required.

Certifications: Must have American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard First Aid and CPR certification or equivalent, Medication Management for Unlicensed Persons in Early Care and Education Settings course, or willingness to obtain certifications. If you do not have these certifications upon hiring, NH Audubon will pay for or reimburse you for the online versions of these courses ($37 value for First Aid/CPR, $20 value for Medication Management). Professional development opportunity provided to complete ACA’s New Camp Director Orientation if new to position.

Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm are necessary. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 and can provide COVID vaccination card at orientation. Camp uniform required (provided).

Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: excellent physical condition with capability to moderately hike, run and climb, tolerance for variable weather conditions, ability to work in an outdoor setting, and able to lift up to 25 lbs.
