What are the responsibilities and job description for the Landfill Scale House Operator position at Augusta-Richmond County?
Responsible for providing customer service, performing work associated with weighing vehicles delivering waste to the landfill or transfer station, recording pertinent data associated with this process, and charges and collects appropriate payment of fees. Processes financial transactions within the guidelines of accounting and bookkeeping practices, relevant County and department policies.
- Weigh trucks, reads scales, record pertinent information, and direct traffic at the landfill or transfer station. Responsible for initial waste screening to ensure illegal/prohibited items are not accepted.
- Assesses and collects fees, posts and balances daily cash and charge revenues from landfill sales to computerized financial system. Accounts for daily receipts and keeps records of special accounts and permits in the transactions of the day.
- Identifies potentially hazardous or unacceptable materials being delivered and notifies the appropriate site personnel. Maintains and enters manifests for special waste and asbestos; coordinates with the appropriate personnel to approve customer loads and establish limitations on special waste.
- Makes daily bank deposits. Prepares daily supply requisitions.
- Performs other accounting and office duties as needed, which may include: collections, new customer set-up, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and work orders.
- Reconciles accounts and monthly billing; processes payments and adjustments.
- Answers the office telephone and responds to questions regarding landfill regulations and operations. Types and files memoranda, correspondence, reports, and charge tickets.
- Provides technical assistance to other staff to resolve work related problems. Serves as a resource for Department personnel.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level
Education: High School diploma or GED
Experience: Minimum of one (1) year experience bookkeeping, customer service, and clerical experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of accounting, bookkeeping, and modern office practices and procedures.
- Ability to learn or Knowledge of the operation of a solid waste scale and the associated peripheral equipment used in weighing and recording weights of vehicles delivering waste to the landfill.
- Ability to accurately read scales and record data.
- Knowledge of County landfill policies and procedures.
- Familiarity with relevant federal, state, and local laws and County and departmental policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Proficiency in first aid, CPR, and AED.
- Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Good communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proficiency in mathematical computations, computer operations, standard business application software, a calculator, and standard office equipment.
CERTIFICATION:
- Preferred (not required): Obtain a state of Georgia Certified Landfill Operator Certificate within 12 months of employment
