The purpose of this classification is to implement a wide variety of recreational programs and events and to perform customer service and administrative support for an assigned facility or recreation program. This classification is distinguished from Recreation Specialist I in that incumbents in this class implement and provide lead direction for recreation programs and activities.
  • Organizes, instructs and supervises assigned recreational activities, which may include youth programs, senior programs, special needs programs, fitness programs and classes, sports leagues and clinics, after school and summer programs, arts and crafts programs, aquatics programs, and special events: plans activities and lessons; gathers supplies and equipment; verifies completion of required forms for each participant; teaches classes, clinics, and skills; provides information and direction; performs assessments; and ensures all activities comply with established rules, policies, procedures and safety standards.
  • Performs customer service functions: provides information or assistance regarding services, activities, forms, procedures, fees, or other issues; responds to routine questions and complaints; researches problems and initiates problem resolution; and refers complaints/problems to appropriate personnel.
  • Processes participant registrations, court reservations, tournament registrations, and other scheduled services and events: receives requests for classes, court times, or other scheduled services; reviews registration forms for accuracy and completeness; enters information into online database and calendars; collects and records fees; and maintains related documentation.
  • Receives and processes fees for programs and activities: counts monies received; balances cash drawer; audits transactions to locate and correct any discrepancies; closes out cash drawer; prepares and submits deposit; and maintains related documentation.
  • Provides routine administrative support: conducts tours; prepares attendance and registration records; copies and files documents; enters computer data, etc.; and maintains inventory of supplies, forms and equipment.
  • Prepares facilities according to daily schedule: opens and closes facility; unlocks and locks doors; turns lights on or off; disarms and sets alarm; moves, sets up, and tears down tables, chairs, etc.; and performs routine cleaning duties such as emptying trash, sweeping floors, etc.
Position Specific Responsibilities:  
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises recreation programs and special events for youth and adult participants.
Education:    High school diploma or GED.  Prefer Associate's Degree or higher in Physical Education, Early Childhood Development, or a related field of study.    
 
Experience:  Two (2) years in recreation programming.

  • Provide clear direction as well as take direction
  • Ability to handle emergencies
  • Ability to handle conflict resolution
  • Good customer service skills
Licensing/Certification:  
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history.  If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment. 
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certification preferred
This position does require staff call up in emergency situations.

  • Verbal:  Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Math:  Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
  • Functional Reasoning:  Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
  • Situational Reasoning:  Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Physical Abilities:  Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
  • Sensory Requirements:  Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors:  Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/human bites, water hazards or rude/irate customers.
