What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Signal Technician Assistant position at Augusta-Richmond County?
- Assists other Traffic Signal Technicians in troubleshooting in the field and restoring operations to traffic control devices that have underground electrical, electronic equipment or electrical wire/cable failure due to vehicular accidents, vandalism, adverse weather, or construction activities.
- Tests traffic signal equipment and related devices under immediate supervision to learn to identify defects in electric and electronic equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance on traffic signal equipment and intelligent transportation system components on an ongoing basis.
Education: High School diploma or GED
Experience: One (1) year experience in basic electrical wiring, use and care of the tools, equipment and materials employed in basic residential or commercial wiring or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation, which takes place mainly in an on-the-job setting.
- Ability to make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects, such as wiring in control cabinets.
- Ability to work at heights of 30 feet, such as in standing in a raised bucket, to repair, remove, or replace a signal head or other signal devices.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of adverse conditions, such as heavy traffic and inclement weather with exposure to natural elements.
- Good communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to program various types of computerized traffic control devices and hanging traffic signal heads during daily work schedule and during on-call rotation.
- Ability to interpret work using electronic schematics, wiring diagrams, and street intersection prints.
- Ability to understand occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electrical and electronic trade.
- Demonstrates continuous efforts to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality seamless customer service.
- Ability to understand the use and care of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of electrical and electronic repair.
Licensing: Must have a valid state operator/driver’s license with good driving history.
This position requires staff call up in an emergency situation and travel from office to other locations more than 50% of the time.PERFORMANCE APTITUDES:
- Physical Abilities: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
- Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
